Designed for BMW ChargeForward participants, the ChargeForward app lets participants take control of their charging with the option to always Charge Immediately, to view your vehicle’s charging status, view and set your departure time settings, and view your monthly rewards and reward history, if applicable. Must have an active BMW ChargeForward account to access.
Do not use
Nearly impossible (or actually impossible) to go back to normal. This app randomly charges and overwrites everything on the car charging and departure schedule - even after you try to cancel and delete the app. Stay away!
Great concept, horrible execution
Want to add to what others have said on departure times. I keep setting up my weekly morning departure schedule and the next time I log into the app it’s been erased with some random evening departure time taking its place. One morning woke to find car hadn’t charged at all overnight. I don’t really care about the incentives… love the concept of timing charging to optimize grid, so gave it 2 stars just for the initiative and effort, but right now it doesn’t work.
German Software
It is OK when it works but my car has failed to charge the last two nights. It changes the departure time in the car and then it does not charge before the morning. My EV charging period starts at 12am. I set the departure time at 7am so it is ready by the morning. This is a dealbreaker. If I want to charge in the daytime I have to manually restart. There is a lack of transparency with the incentives. Support is only by email. I am waiting for an answer for two days and maybe wil hear back next week. Buggy app + limited support. The support people don’t really seem to know what is going on with this app.
Randomly changes departure times
I’ve had many instances where the departure times change randomly or the car isn’t charged for the departure time. Several emails with the BMW concierge but no fix. Just seems like more of a hassle for the benefit and not being able to trust that the car is going to be fully charged.
Pre Condiditioning
The app seems to work as advertised. However, if I enable pre-conditioning to “on” in the My BMW App, after I plug in, that toggle turns off. It will stay on only after resetting it, but plugging in turns it off again.
Not ready for prime time
This app isn’t ready for prime time. The concept is nice, but the execution isn’t. I have had lots of problems with the vehicle and using this app together. When the app tells the vehicle to pause charging during ‘optimized’ times, the vehicle stops charging (which is expected). But when this happens, the vehicle reports that ‘Charing cable unlocked’ even when it isn’t. There is a setting in the car where it will release or unlock the charging cable when finished. Mine is disabled because I don’t want some rando unplugging my car when I’m not charging at home. Because the charging cable is reporting as unlocked, the vehicle won’t resume charging when the scheduled time arrives. This leaves me with an uncharged vehicle when I need it. I have to babysit the vehicle and unplug it when the schedule is ‘optimized’ or paused, and re-plug it so that when the time comes it will start charging again. In short, the vehicle doesn’t like to be paused when charging, because it won’t start again. But this is the point of the app, to start and stop charging when the timing is ‘optimized’ for green charging. Perhaps the app needs an update? Perhaps the vehicle also needs a firmware update? Scheduled charging has never really worked for my 2023 i4. The peak charging time for my area is between 4PM and 8 PM. I think I’ll just go back to remembering to plug in after 8 PM to avoid peak charges and save myself from all this hassle.
Unenrolled and now car won’t charge until last minute
