Turn any Trail Map into a "GPS Trail Map" and follow your location as you move anywhere on the map. A Trail Map is converted to a GPS Trail Map by adding at least two geo-location “pins” to the map as you walk the trail. Additional pins improve the accuracy of the GPS Trail Map and correct for any artistic ‘errors’ in the Trail Map. Trail Maps used to make a new GPS Trail Map can come from three sources: the iPhone camera, the Photo App and any website image or pdf. Once made, GPS Trail Maps can be saved on a World Map and become available to all users of the app. Expect to see more and more fully functional GPS Trail Maps on the World Map and available for your use. The app requires an inexpensive Token to locate your position on a GPS Trail Map. A Token allows you to follow your location for 12 hours after it is used. The app comes with 5 free Tokens. Additional Tokens can be purchased in a package of 10 Tokens using an In App Purchase. GPS Trail Map uses a least squares fit to position, orient and stretch the map onto GPS coordinates using geo-location pins placed on the map. It then projects your current GPS location onto that map favoring nearby pins with a 1/(r+∆)^3 weighting factor for each pin. Great Tool! Love this app!
Where some very popular “trail tracking” software offers some real benefits, they fail to offer the outstanding ability that GPS Trail Map puts in the palm of your hand! That is the ability to make a gps map for any trail you might choose to hike. I live in an area with many wonderful trails, none of which show up in the trail catalogs of some very popular apps. So I couldn’t be more pleased with the ability to easily make a gps map for any trail I hike! Of course, I’ll be sure to tell friends and fellow hiking enthusiasts in my area about GPS Trail Maps. And they will benefit greatly from my efforts. Because I plan to create a new trail map each time I hike a different trail. Within a couple of seasons, with any luck, I should build a fairly complete catalog for my area of Downeast Maine. I should, in all fairness, acknowledge that I did note a couple of very minor display bugs, which in no way interfered with the effectiveness of this awesome app. I reported them to the app developer, who expressed appreciation, and assured me they would be corrected with the next update. Couldn’t hope for better than that! Lastly, let me say that the cost of using this app, which is completely free for your first 5 uses, is extremely reasonable after that. Happy trails, fellow hikers!
