Receive alerts of Gravitational Wave Events from the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Collaboration (LVK) on your iPhone. This is an app for both the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Community and the general public. It provides low latency alerts using the Open Public Alerts currently being deployed by the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network (GCN) through GCN/LVK Notices (https://emfollow.docs.ligo.org/userguide/). To receive alerts using the app just select the category of alerts you wish to receive - it's that simple! The O3 observing run ended in March 2020. O4 is expected to start in May 2023. The app will download all O4 events and counterparts as they are reported through a GCN Notice in addition to any related GCN Circulars. The app database is pre-populated with selected Notices and Circulars from all previous O1, O2 and O3 events. The app retains Notices for one Mock Event reported through GCN for testing purposes. (For information on LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Collaboration GCN Notices see: https://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/lvc.html .) Includes an interactive sky map showing the location of each event. The app also has a public Message exchange bulletin board and some interesting Links. The Links provide information on Gravitational Waves and the LIGO and Virgo observatories.
Fascinating GW App
It’s hard to believe you can get instant notifications on gravitational wave events on your personal smartphone. That we can detect them at all is a miracle of modern science. I must admit however that much of the info presented in this app is technical and over my head, with numerous acronyms I don’t understand and technical data given that I cannot interpret. Thus, the app could be improved if there were significant descriptions and background info on GW events, the various detectors, the info presented, etc. Photos of the detectors for example and graphics would be super helpful. Thanks, B
.0001 times the diameter of a Proton
That’s what change LIGO can detect between its mirrors and when it does my phone here on Grand Cayman tells me about it! A BNS or a NSBH or the ultimate BBH event at my fingertips, Absolutely amazing!!
The steady rumble of the universe
Like distant continuous crackling thunder LIGO leves me in in stunned amazement of the immensity of the cosmos. Like any background radiation you keep thinking there could be a pattern and just get hypnotized by the static. As a kid in the 60s watching Trek, I never imagined that we would actually someday hear this. Still in Awe. ✨
Chirp
I’ve had the app 24 hours and in that time 10 new GW events have been detected! BBH, BNS: each with a dedicated “chirp” that alerts me to the type of event!
Astronomy by a new method
It just amazes me that we can see the universe by way of gravity waves. Incredible technology adding to our knowledge and it’s great fun as well!
Love it. Hope you add more features
Would love to be able to playback the real sound and see the frequency wave
Excellent app
This is an excellent app. It gives you access to up to the minute information about gravity waves. I hope the folks in charge of the NANOGRAV experiment will make a similar app.
Corrected Bilby maps Changed classification from Terrestrial to Neutron Star if BNS+NSBH>10% Changed FAR threshold for High FAR when BNS+NSBH>10% to >1 per month Changed FAR threshold for High FAR when BBH>90% to >1 per year
