United StatesThe FUTÁR application by BKK Centre for Budapest Transport has been renewed under the name BudapestGO, which, in addition to real-time route planning, has been extended with new functions: you can buy digital single tickets, daily and weekly travelcards or passes in the application and you can also be informed immediately about the current transport service changes. You can use the route planner with a cleaner and clearer interface, facilitated by a number of new features. New features in the app: - Ticket and pass purchase, journey planning in a single app - Digital single ticket now also available - Automatic pass renewal - Traffic information (BKK Info application integrated) - Personalised transport updates via push message - Trip planning for trains and suburban railways available with a BKK-pass - Simplified interface - You can buy local or intercity tickets and passes for most municipalities in Hungary.
Tourist beware
It’s almost a setup. The system is overly complicated and conductors tries to scam people in paying fine. Just buy daily passes if you want to use this pathetic public transport service who targets tourists.

I miss half my trams and buses waiting for the app to open so I can validate. The paper slips are easier.

App cost me $30 because the option to select two passengers only appeared when you open the app and it was unclear when purchasing day passes if you were buying one ticket for one person or if the pass counted for two. There was no way for me to go in the app and verify how many tickets I need to purchase or how many passengers I selected. Left me paying a fine for unknowingly only purchasing one ticket and paying an unnecessary fine of $30 for not having the second.

United StatesA year later and not better: this should be two apps
The old navigation app is fantastic: real time updates and route planning on one of the world’s best public transportation system. The newer ticketing app is a good idea (you can buy tickets in the app, no need to find and open ticket booth, etc.) and there are impressive technical features (e.g. the QR code reader is one of the fastest I have ever seen), but there are VERY SERIOUS USABILITY ISSUES that makes it barely usable by a visitor (I guess locals can figure out or get used to most of these inexplainable idiosyncrasies, but why would one have to do that in the 20s? None of this is rocket science, just basic user centered app design) 1 — The matter that the top rated review mentioned more than a year ago is still unresolved (and it should never have been an issue — this appears to be an app by a government-monopoly that does not need to respond to user feedback as there is no alternative to ride the public transport in Bupadest): If you plan a trip, you can’t switch the app to using your pass and actually begin or continue your trip. From the trip planning screen it takes about 8 frantic back-clicks (as your bus is pulling in to the stop) to open the QR code reader and board the vehicle. Doing that also deletes your planned trip and there is no trip history to easily find your last trip: you can start planning your trip again on the moving vehicle from scratch if you find a seat and free your hands to do so (which may not even work as the app may not recognize that you are already on the bus or metro or tram). IF THEY CANT DEVELOP A SWITCH OVER A YEAR, WHY IS THIS NOT JUST TWO SEPARATE APPS? THAT WOULD MAKE THIS SO MUCH BETTER. 2 — There are other shocking usability issues though: when the QR code reader registers a trip (I guess that’s what it does, since I never figured out whether it truly worked) there is some weird graphic with large colorful arrows slithering on the screen with no text or any clue what’s happening or what the user should or should not do. If you try to get back to your trip planning screen this thing disappears and I could not find a way to revive it. Is that good or bad? What will you do if the ticket control person shows up?? 3 — The ticket buying process is pretty painful as well. And interestingly if you can’t find your existing and active time-limited ticket to launch the QR code reader when changing vehicle, it uses up a second ticket without warning (i.e. you will use two tickets simultaneously for the same ride.) 4 - no, you cannot use two tickets for two people (why??)

The most inconvenient part of this app is that it does not allow you to access your tickets without exiting from the transport navigation (Which means you lose access to your pre-planned route every time you need to scan the QR codes.) Seems like a huge oversight! Next request. Please let us tap on a particular stop along the route in navigation to see other busses or trams stopping there. This used to be a useful feature in BKK app time. Sad that it’s not there anymore. Currently, when you tap on a bus stop, it takes you to the bus’s route instead of showing other bus options.

as is, it is pretty annoying. Incredibly slow, limited payment options—buying paper tickets makes life easier: and it should be the other way round…
