Fly your squadron of Spitfires on various dangerous missions against the planes of the Luftwaffe! Achtung Spitfire! is a fun turn based strategy game where you rotate and then flick your planes to try and get onto the tails of the enemy aircraft to stand the best chance of shooting them down, while taking care to protect your own rear.
There’s a decent game in here, but...
The flicking mechanic stinks. The game requires a good amount of precision, as evidenced by the extreme competence of the AI, yet you have very little. Critical Mass succeeds because very little of the physics are random, and none of it dexterity based. Really wish we just had a thrust arrow to extend or retract. Going back to CM after a stint with this. Edit: played this a little more today. It’s super unfair how your enemies have insane firing range, but you don’t even have the option to fire your guns until you’re super close up. This just feels like a programming glitch, rather than a feature. Revising my rating down a star. Since you have to “lock on” before the option to fire is even available, the game seriously limits your agency to dogfight. It all feels a little pointless, especially compared to Critical Mass.
Bad mechanics
I could be directly behind an enemy plane and not land any hits when I fire and then an enemy plane could be two planes behind me and kill me instantly the mechanics are bad
What are these Enemy AI Pilots?
The fly perfectly always hitting you at the exact angle needed in order to shred you immediately. Impossible to match this because how would I be able to perfectly measure up the power for a flick, so I don’t go soaring past the enemy plane? (And then only for the enemy plane to turn around and blast my planes in this crazy unforeseen angle)
You forgot to add this into the game
There needs to be a exit button because when you know your going to lose or you entered the wrong mission it just wastes A LOT of your time and it would be nice to have a better chance of hitting you target and tons of times I was right behind a enemy plane and I shot my guns and he didn’t even end up losing 1 health and I was right behind him there was barely any space in between us right now I’m gonna give you like maybe just two stars if you can add this into the game I will raise up to five and I am good at remembering so I don’t think I’m gonna forget this.
Bf109 Op
Bf109s seem to kill me from a far range that spans hit box and always shoots me down in 1 shot, fix this
AI enemy pilots are all aces
Enemy AI pilots are better than friendly AI pilots and always line shots up perfectly - a level of accuracy that seems impossible to achieve with the flicking action required to move your own planes. Maybe add a secondary method of choosing distance to move.
So far, so good
This is what one would expect from Sean O’Connor - functionally dependable, with a good balance of details with playability. The frustrating parts are realistic (maneuverability has limits, and you have to move before you can shoot). Having stumbled through the first 10 scenarios, I’m ready for 11-20!
