Use True Note to test a record player to see if it's playing at the correct speed. Here's how: 1. Download the True Note app and open it 2. Print and cut out the included turntable strobe disc 3. Place the strobe disc on your record player and start it at the 33 1/3 RPM speed 4. Tap "START" in the True Note app and shine the flashing LED light from your iOS device onto the strobe disc If your record player is playing at the correct speed, you should be able to make out the individual lines on the strobe disc - and they should appear to remain in the same position (not drifting in one direction). Many record players have an adjustable speed and can be calibrated with the help of True Note. Perhaps you're shopping for a used record player? The True Note strobe disc is small enough that you can fold it in half to keep in your wallet or iPhone case - ready to use when you're at a thrift store or garage sale and want to make sure the turntable you're considering buying works properly.
Not idiot proof
In order to use this app properly one needs to know if they have a 50 or 60 hz motor. I downloaded and printed the proper speed checker. Preprinted speed disc are also available for 15-20 through mail order. When done properly this app works totally gets the job done.
I need a printer? Seriously?
I wasn’t counting on needing a printer to use this.
Incorrect on iPhone 13
Does not produce correct frequency, at least with an iPhone 13.
Great for Empire Turntable Owners
This app is great to ensure that my 1975 Empire 598 III Troubadour turntable is spinning at the proper speed. Since there is already a strobe disc built-in to the center portion of the platter for both 45rpm and 33 1/3rpm, the 60hz strobe light setting within this app lets me adjust the rotational speed properly until it is locked-in completely for proper playback. Other apps will give you ballpark figures, but only a strobe will give you a proper reading every time. Highly recommend to turntable owners that already own strobe discs or platters.
Great App
This was the only app I found that actually helped me fix my turntable. It was straightforward and quick to use. I wish it included a 45 rpm strobe disc as well, but I was able to find one online.
Works great!
I didn’t try their strobe disc, but the strobe matched up accurately with the one on my technics turntable. Pretty cool!
Works great
Thank you for this very simple and useful app. My turntable did not come with a built in strobe, but did include speed control. I purchased a stroboscopic disc but using it with household lamps was fine but not as simple as I would have hoped. After trying a few other strobe apps, which gave varied results, I have found this app works the best. Simple and effective, and appears to work on both 50 and 60 htz settings. Music sounds great. Thank you.
I’ve added a tip jar. If True Note is useful to you, please consider leaving a tip to help fund future updates of the app. Thanks for your support!
