ShareBot is the missing Share Extension for Shortcuts on macOS. It allows you to run any of your shortcuts on items like files, URLs or text shared from any app with share menu support like Finder, Safari, Twitter or Chrome. Notes: • When you select the ShareBot extension in a share menu, ShareBot will run a shortcut named “Run Shortcut” that will read the contents shared by the ShareBot extension and forward them to other shortcut of your choosing. • You can easily install and customize the “Run Shortcut” shortcut from the ShareBot app. • You can enable the ShareBot extension from the “Extensions” pane at “System Preferences”. • ShareBot requires Automation permission to list and run you shortcuts. You can gran Automation permission for ShareBot in the “Privacy” section of the “Security & Privacy” panel at “System Preferences”. Privacy by Design: ShareBot works completely on-device and does not store or send any information outside of the protected app sandbox.
Adds functionality Apple should have included with Shortcuts!
I'm not sure why Shortcuts for macOS shipped without the ability for shortcuts to act on share input, but this app is a perfect shim that gives you the ability to share things from the macOS share menu to a shortcut of your choosing. The developer was also prompt in answering my questions on Twitter, which I much appreciated. ProTip: Designate the app to use the "Run Shortcut" shortcut that the app offers to install; this will open up a menu of all your shortcuts, and then it will correctly decode the shared text and send it to the shortcut. I made the mistake of picking one of my other shortcuts directly as the shortcut to run, and it didn't work as I expected because my shortcut got a JSON object as input. I really only want to use it with this one shortcut, so I'll probably adapt it to add the other shortcut's decoding logic.
Bought For Safari - Didn't Work
I'm sure the app does what it says, but there should be a warning in the description that it can't run shortcuts inside of Safari (like ones that run javascript in the browser, i.e. Unpaywall). My unpaywall shortcut works fine still on my iPhone, but not on mac through this app. I suspect that's a shortcoming of Apple's implementation of Shortcuts on Mac unfortunately. I hope one day this can actually work with that.
Fantastic utility that should be built in
Does what it says on the tin, allows you to run shortcuts from any share sheet on the Mac rather than the limited selection that Apple makes available. If you use shortcuts you need this app!
