Encrypt all DNS queries on all networks with the official NextDNS app for iOS. On iOS 14, this app uses the new native Encrypted DNS setting. You can set your configuration ID from your NextDNS account in the Settings to bring your blocking policy to your phone and get Analytics and Logs about your traffic. If you do not have a NextDNS account yet, you can create one for free at https://nextdns.io.
Hit and miss
Posted a prior review that noted that ad white space isn’t removed and this continues to be the case to some extent. The service is inconsistent as this is completely blocked sometimes and not others. I use the profile download method and not the app. Also tried the app and the same thing happened.
Blocks ads… but
With proper configuration you can block ads and unwanted data being sent, but the cost of this is destroying your phone’s ability to accurately reflect the bandwidth you have resulting in pixelated and low quality videos. YouTube will regularly assume 360p is maximum. Twitter doesn’t load anything of quality. Even the Apple App Store is confused and shows pixelated videos. The worst part is that it takes awhile for these apps to unlearn the assumption your data access isn’t great. The instagram experience and tik tok videos degrade to an unrecognizable quality.
Fast but doesn’t remove ad white space
After using a VPN based ad blocker and DNS blocker I’ve come to realize that the VPN method is best. NextDNS does not remove all of the white space where the ads show up so you have very long web pages with large areas where the ads were at that are just black spaces. With a VPN based ad blocker it removes all of the white space so you don’t see all of that and only see the condensed website as it was meant to be. DNS is faster than VPN though.
Seems Abandoned by Devs
The app seems like it was left by the wayside by the Devs and otherwise is pretty useless now! Maybe Quad9 might work better for some people
Doesn’t Work Properly Anymore
The developers need to stop pushing their configuration profile onto people and start to focus on development of their app. Most people prefer the app so give people what they want. Besides the developers need to start giving people a choice between DoT and DoH rather than force the slower DoH onto people. And give people an option to use a VPN connection to enable DoQ (QUIC) since Apple currently doesn’t offer native support for QUIC. And there is a reason people prefer the app. For starters it’s easier to set up and it’s easier to turn the DNS on and off compared to the configuration profile. With the app you simply add your ID and then once you have the app enabled you can turn the DNS off and on directly from the app. The configuration profile takes more time to set up and you have to always go back into settings to turn it off and on. But seriously NextDNS needs to start making DoT available in both their app and configuration profile. Even Mullvad DNS offers a DoT version of their configuration profile. I personally refuse to use the configuration profile. Currently I use DNS Security Pro because it lets me use NextDNS’s DoT standard and has a similar off and on button. The only downside is it costs $2
Excellent service
This is an excellent service. I don’t feel like I really need a VPN much these days since most traffic is HTTPs anyways now. But I don’t want my information tracked or sold so Next DNS is great. It doesn’t impact your Internet speed hardly at all and also is fine on your battery life for iOS devices, doesn’t drain your battery. It’s also quite fast and will also automatically use the nearest of their servers to your location. Furthermore, I no longer have to use browser plug-ins for ad blocking since it has filtering built-in. All in all this is an excellent service that I’m quite happy with.
Do not work
Ate to day the Next DNS didn’t work in Afghanistan and At is IP is blocked we need the new version of Next DNS.
