United StatesNebula is a scalable overlay networking tool with a focus on performance, simplicity and security. It lets you seamlessly connect computers anywhere in the world. It can be used to connect a small number of devices, but is also able to connect tens of thousands of devices. Nebula incorporates a number of existing concepts like encryption, security groups, certificates, and tunneling, and each of those individual pieces existed before Nebula in various forms. What makes Nebula different to existing offerings is that it brings all of these ideas together, resulting in a sum that is greater than its individual parts.
Need to be able to use a custom DNS server
I really really want to use Nebula on my phone, but the lack of custom dns servers is kind of a dealbreaker for me. Like I want Nebula to use a device connected to the mesh as the DNS server instead of whatever iOS decides to use. Similar to how you can specify the DNS in a WireGuard config.

I’m loving Nebula in general. The iOS app is also good. Only two things I would request: the ability to route all traffic over the nebula tunnel like an oldschool VPN (assuming appropriate unsafe routes are set) and also the ability to set the DNS servers on iOS. Thanks for the awesomeness!
United StatesA bit of a step backwards
As my more forgiving, detailed prior review seems to have been deleted, I'll leave a succinct review: the network extension is a bit hang-y if you keep the overlay network running. Your whole iPad will need a reboot about once a day if you leave this running. Older version didn't do that. It's too bad. Nebula is cool on other platforms. The iOS client is clunky and janky and crashy.

slackhq/nebula is a terrific low-friction overlay network that's easy to get up and running in minutes on most systems. It's a pain to get going on iOS because of the super awkward cert deployment interface, some puzzling jankiness in the configuration UI. Having said that, it's one of the few such systems that just fires up and keeps the tun interface nailed up. I wish there were a way to configure it to do that on boot. Unfortunately this latest build has been something of a disaster. A seamless overlay network I don't even have to think about for days or weeks at a time has turned into complete network stack hangs that require SMC-level hard shutdowns of my device when anything with a network thread is broken. At this point it's a device crash risk any time I rejoin the overlay. I adore Nebula and I look forward to seeing it mature just a bit more into the small, focused, stable, beautiful, polished system it's so very close to being. Unfortunately, the iOS end of things is a bit of a weak point in the ecosystem right now.
