Simple, uncluttered, powerful. This calculator has no buttons because it's controlled by your keyboard, freeing up valuable screen space. What it lacks in clutter is made up for in features. You can resize the window, make it float above all windows, or make it full screen. Choose different color schemes. Ten memory registers save their contents when you quit the app. Perform date calculations. Record macros and speed up your work. For advanced users, features like RPN mode and fixed point display are just a keystroke away. A really awesome help window tells you what keys to use.
Good replacement for Apple's
Apple's calculator is brain-damaged: Unlike every other calculator, it doesn't process calculations in the order you enter them. For example, if you enter 50 50 ÷ 2, instead of getting 50, you get 75, because Apple processes it as 50 (50 ÷ 2). Minimalist Calculator operates the way common calculators have operated since they were invented in the 1970s: calculating in the order you make the entries. Besides that, it's a floating, transparent window, so it never gets in the way of whatever figures you're looking at in some other window that you need to enter. You can copy what it generates, paste values in, store values in 10 different memory slots, get the difference between two dates, record macros, and use RPN mode if you like. "Minimalist Calculator" is a misnomer; it's much more than that, and certainly better than Apple's ridiculousy app.
Exactly what I was after
This is the calculator I've wanted for Mac for a long time. Simple float-over window with RPN. Thanks!
Great RPN Calculator
Perfect for simple RPN calculations; works especially well with a numeric keypad. Love the option to show the stack and the float feature. Simple and intuitive to switch x and y and roll through the stack using the arrow keys. Please assign a single key stroke option for 'change sign’ such as the space bar.
Perfect!!!
I downloaded half a dozen calculators before finding this one. Obviously, I wasn’t happy with any of them. This one is perfect. It does everything it needs to do without the bloat that so many other calculators throw in. It is perfectly and elegantly simple. Who knew that finding a calculator that kept a running total was so hard to find? This one does that. I also like that I can float it over everything so if I’m working on my checkbook and bank statements, I don’t have to keep opening the calculator…it’s right there where I need it. To the developers: Thank you so much. You are appreciated!!! To the rest of you, get this app!
I use it nearly every day
Although I do not need the Help as often as I used to, very little has changed since my initial review a year and a half ago. I still believe that this is a tremendous app, and I kind of like the large font!
Brain dead app
This utter waste of an app actually thinks “size the font to the size of the window” is a useful feature. Would you like one digit to be 500px high to fill the window? Then this is your app! Add to the fact the developer thinks RPN is “better” and that tells you everything you need to know here. Apparently someone fell asleep at UI design day at programming school.
Nice!
This is a nice little calculator with lots of appealing features, including an RPN mode (the only way to go) and a resizable floating window that's always visible (a big deal if you’re using other apps at the same time). Only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5: you need to memorize a bunch of keyboard commands to use all the features. But they’re fairly intuitive, so once you use it for a while you’ll pick them up naturally. This app is worth the very modest price - especially if you want RPN and you appreciate minimal design.
