App crashes often and needs A LOT of improvements
I live on the island and I’m a big fan of the big island Revealed book, constantly recommending it to friends and family that come to visit. However, I wouldn’t recommend paying for the app mostly due to its technical difficulties, the app crashes about 80% of the time when opening. The book is great, but impossible to keep updated and fully accurate.. so I turned to the app hoping for the latest information. Though, it’s more updated than the book, it not as quick to update as I’d hoped. I’ve had this paid subscription for about a year now and though the content is pretty good, the functionality of the app is horrible. It’s heavily reliable on internet service, which is not ideal when you don’t have cell signal for the majority of the hikes (Hilo, Kohala, volcano, South Island). Not being able to preload the directions prior or even load the app without Internet a huge handicap. The navigation of the app itself is laid out “ok” but it would be nice if at the home page you could browse per city for sites/beaches/restaurants. This would make it easier for planning out itineraries of nearby places or of the city that you intend to spend the day in. I like that the app has a planner feature, but it’s fairly useless to me if I can’t sort by distance or even see all stops on the same map to manually reorganize. I ended up using Google maps multi stop feature. Another “wish list feature”, it doesn’t currently have the capability of showing you nearby attractions. Cruising the opposite ends of island from my home, there are many times when I find myself asking “I wonder what’s nearby to visit” wether it be food stop or site seeing. Having the ability to pull up the map and see bullets of the nearby attractions would be very useful. I really hope they improve this app as it has potential to be a great resource for the island visitors and residents, but as is, it’s just not worth the $18 or $20 fee.

I’ve used this app several times over the past six or eight years. The info provided is excellent insight into the sights around the island with an insiders angle to how to approach them. There is a heathy amount of pithiness in the descriptions that make reading fun. I’m a big fan of this app.

I purchased this app a couple of weeks ago. Now I can’t use it because only the free preview opens for me. It will not restore my purchase. I have tried deleting and reinstalling it to no avail. I want a refund.

We bought the app before our trip and have used it many times on our trip. It’s the best way to get the “inside scoop” about places to visit. The beach information is especially helpful. Would highly recommend it. I love that it includes maps on each page .

I used the book and now the app every time I go to Hawaii. It makes it even easier to have a relaxing and spontaneous vacation. If you do your homework ahead of time and pick favorites, you can just decide at the last minute wherever you are on the island, what you want to do and you can go right there. If you have any technical or subscription issues with the app, the customer support is fantastic.
