Description
Imagine... You see an avalanche, you ski over to the crown and pull out your iPhone. You snap a photo, measure the slope angle and aspect, then record a crown profile, all on your phone. As you ski down the path, you use your phone as GPS to map the slide. When you get to the toe of the slide you send a diagram of the crown and a map of the slide to your colleagues back at the office, then you post it to the Avalanche Lab network to alert everyone else. With Avalanche Lab you can do all that and more.

Avalanche Lab was developed out of a desire to easily enter snow and avalanche data in the field, and then electronically share that data. Avalanche Lab uses all those fancy features on your iPhone to make it as easy as possible. It has all the features an avalanche professional would want, and is simple enough to be used by backcountry skiers and even snowboarders.

Avalanche Lab includes clinometer, GPS, and compass support so you can accurately measure and mark your field sites. Avalanche Lab is designed to be used in the field, there is no need for a wifi or cell signal. Most inputs are multiple choice to eliminate the need for typing, and the buttons are big for use with cold fingers.

Avalanche Lab produces professional quality snow pit diagrams in the standard format, and in a compact format for display on mobile devices, and saves diagrams as an image or PDF file. Other export formats include KML maps of avalanches, CAAML xml, and SnowPilot format. Avalanche Lab can also import CAAML v5 snow profiles so you can load data from other software for viewing in the field.

Unusable Waste Of Money

I would like a refund. Maybe you haven’t updated this App but it is barely functional. I’ll be contacting Apple to see if they can do anything. Buggy, buggy, buggy. Perhaps the worst way to record a pit profile. I can think of a dozen better ways than the unusable app this is. Please do not buy.

Incredible! My favorite thing available for iPhone

I'm so happy I found this app! It's perfect for recording snowpit data and crown profiles. I love this because my handwriting is the worst. Outside in wet weather my notebook is beyond the worst. This keeps the system organized. Thanks for developing this app. Only one tweak that would set me into total snow geek nirvana: integrate the camera, compass and clinometer into the camera feature similar to what the Utah Avalanche center app uses. Having angle, aspect and elevation overlayed on the picture is wicked awesome. However as it is, it is totally usable as a notebook replacement. I'm stoked to use this!

Not Pleased

Super buggy. Location data is horrible and rarely updates even when entering manual coordinates. Profile function is a pain to use and not intuitive. Field books and Snow Pilot are far superior. Don't waste your time...

Not giving up my field book quite yet.

I'm giving 4 stars relative to the cost of the Pro version which is pretty high. For the price I expect an amazing app with no functional hitches. This app almost there. I'm still not convinced that it's a replacement for my field book. So far I'm using both in parallel. Maybe with a bit more practice I could enter my observations directly but it still doesn't have the trip planning area that's in a field book. I've emailed questions to the developer and the response time was very prompt.

Avuncular lab

Takes some practice to learn how to use, but is an excellent tool for tracking pit profiles and data. Has great tools inside the application.

Avy Lab Rules Your World

A little buggy, crashes here and there, but a great way to generate pit profiles. Appears to be fully SWAG compliant - I use my notebook in the field and then transfer the data back home. Some great features, has a load of potential for networked observation sharing. Has all the tools you need - clinometer, crystal card, and location. I'd consider using this instead of a notebook, but wet iPhone screens can be a pain and its still a little buggy for me to shed my analog ways. If you're a Level 2 backcountry enthusiast or a snow geek, this is a great tool to have in your quiver!
