A food bank is a charitable organization that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough to avoid hunger. In North America, a food pantry or food closet is a small front line agency that hands out packages of food from food banks directly to people in need.

Some food banks operate on the "front line" model, giving out food directly to the hungry.  Others operate on the "warehouse" model, supplying food to intermediaries like food pantries, soup kitchens and other front-line organisations.
