Disappointing
How can the language’s most respected and finest dictionary turn out such a humdrum app: the word of the day is often not even a word (TN is today’s) and often a proper noun (like Tennessee). The app is poorly designed and, for me, a mess. What a disappointment! Give me the printed American Heritage Dictionary any time: never a finer one dealing with the American language.
Ease of use
Lots of synonyms and antonyms for each word
Never loads - perpetual white screen
I’ve never been able to use the app because it doesn’t load and just has a white screen.
Best English dictionary I have ever seen
I have used the American Heritage dictionary exclusively for fifty years. The most important things my father ever advised were these. Never stop reading and learning. If you aren’t certain of a word’s definition look it up. After you’ve looked up the same word five times you will know it. Vocabulary is the essence of thought. I used paperback versions for forty years and several years back I have used my unabridged 1969 first edition which belonged to my great aunt, Edith Parker, and if you look up her New York Times obituary you will see that she and a colleague in the State Department wrote the Declaration of War in 1941. She was a Professor of History. I have a masters in European History and am a CFO for a FinTech firm and I don’t like Tech much. I like to draw pictures and read books, preferably those printed before 1990, on a press. So, I hesitated to buy an app. I was reading a Cavafy poem yesterday. He referred to Hyacinth. I looked it up with this app. At instantly I was reminded that he meant Hyacinthus and then I could flash back to hyacinth and see a beautiful photograph of the flower. So now this is my primary dictionary. I also want to thank American Heritage for preparing me for the GRE many years ago. I scored 94th percentile in Verbal. I got my first American Heritage dictionary at Cody’s in Berkeley when I was a student there. It is my dictionary for life.
Does not like iOS 16
I upgraded to iOS 16.3 from 15xx, and when the splash screen goes away all I get is a blank screen with an ad at the bottom. When it worked, it was my go-to dictionary. AHD has been my favorite for over 30 years. But for now, I’ve removed the app from my phone. I hope they make it work soon!
Great tool
I had bought the cd back in 1994 and now I downloaded this morning old version will not work with windows 10
Won’t work for iOS 16.2
Please update my favorite dictionary app to be compatible, I miss it.
