Plot is a scientific 2D plotting program. This project started in 1993 with SciPlot on NeXTStep and continues with "Plot" for OS X till 2007. With buying the Pro version of Plot you will help to keep Plot alive and you get some extra color schemes. Plot is designed for everyday plotting, it is easy to use, it creates high quality plots, and it allows easy and powerful manipulations and calculations of data. Basically Plot allows to work with multiple documents where every document consists of one or more XY data sets (called buffer in Plot). There is also the possibility to add subviews (plots inside plots) to your document. A subview is completely independent with its own data buffers, graphic attributes etc. Data can be imported from text or binary files, with a Perl based import filter. It is also possible to import data by using copy&paste or drag&drop from other programs. Plot supports many plotting styles like lines, symbols, grids, bars, filled areas, sticks, dots, histograms, error bars, automatic legend, text and graphic objects, etc. Plot can import images from other programs with copy&paste or drag&drop. Plot has many data manipulation methods integrated: smooth, spline interpolation, differentiation, integration, normalising, moving, data calculations, function generator, curve fitting, etc. Plot has also a built in macro language for automating complex tasks.
Great, takes some time to learn
I use this program for graphics in journal publications. There is a bit of a learning curve but it creates clean, high-quality graphics. Stop using iWork or MS Office for graphics NOW and starting using Plot2.
Still the best
I've been using every version of Plot for nearly 10 years. Academic papers, presentations, marketing materials... this is truly the best way to beautifully present data on the Mac. Take the time to learn it, use the macro language, and you won't be disappointed.
Great 2D plotting software
This is a great, simple and user friendly software. It took me about 1 hour to figure out how to use the software. I used MATLAB and excel before, they are not compareble to this software for the quality of the final export image! I hope there was also a 3D plot version or more variation of 2D plots. Also I dont know how to use the command lines for more innovative plots, hope they bring more interesting features into Inspector. I'm very happy for this purchase. I hope the seller make a simple software for making scientific illustrations with the same high qulity output.
Efficient but difficult to use
As others have noted, this program handles large data sets well (at least up to 100,000 data points, from my experience). On the other hand, the UI for this program is poor. The documentation is sparse and nothing is intuitive. Some basic features seem to be missing, others replaced by counter-intuitive behavior. For example, attempting to zoom in on part of a chart will actually modify the chart by changing the axis bounds to accomplish the zoom. I have both Plot2 Pro and Plot2 (the author's other app) and both seem to receive updates at the same time and I cannot tell a difference between them.
Incredible Program
To be completely honest, I’m just a novice in this field. However, I can say without a doubt that this is by far the best program I’ve ever used for graphing just about anything. I would agree with what someone said in another review that I honestly don’t care if the Pro version contains any special features because I just want to help keep this project alive. Of course I have yet to learn all the powerful nuances to this program, but I’m sure it will be worth it. Hope that this project stays alive for another 24 years!
Best plotting program
I’ve been using this app for a few years and have recommended it to nearly everyone I know in the scientific community who uses a mac. It has the right number of features to easily make publication quality plots. Plus once you figure out how to write macros and scripts, it makes repetitive plotting very simple, which is a lot of what I do. Michael is also very responsive to taking care of bug fixes and comes up with useful features. I believe that you need to use your own product for your own work, so you can feel the pain that your users feel when something isn’t right, whether it is a bug or clunky UI. I think we have a developer who cares about his product and urge everyone to support him if possible.
Best scientific plotting program, period.
I have been using this for years now and are more than happy to spend $10 on it. Amazing program that my whole group at Harvard Medical School (I run a biophysics lab there) uses. During my PhD I used a lot of Origin (never warmed up to Sigmaplot; Excel just wasn’t made for handling and graphing large data sets) but that was on PC. After starting postdoc at HMS (where everyone uses mac), I was looking for something that would fill the gap and I was not disappointed. Given that Origin has gotten less and less stable over the years (I still occasionally use it on Windows machines hooked up to spectrometers), this app is my favourite pick across all platforms. Please buy to keep it up and running!
