Ouch!
Just purchased v.9 for $60 the end of January 2022. The "50% discount" doesn't help brand new MacFamilyTree user feel very good at all. It just doesn't feel considerate. Disappointing.
Updates often
It's a complicated program but geneaology isn't simple. They update it often, which is a sign of active support. That gives me confidence in putting so much effort into this. I took over from my father who started way back on some earlier version. I do wish there was an upgrader's discount. If Apple won't do it then maybe sell directly?
I feel ripped-off
Less than 2 months ago I bought the newest version of this (Version 9) for $35. Now they want another $35 for version 10, with no upgrade path for my previous purchase. I feel like I'm an existing customer who has to pay $70 for the same thing a new customer gets for $35. I'm done with this company and will give Familty Tree Maker a try.
version 9 vs version 10
I just bought v9 last week and now v10 has come out this week with a $35 upgrade fee. I should get the new version for free.
at Last
I have used about 4 different family tree program and was so glad I have a MacBook and this softwear is fantastic. I jusy love all the options it has Whuch was great for me. I highly remmomd it.
Need more support
Not as intuitive as I would like. Difficult to find answers to how to do things.
Mac -Yes. Hindered by poor UI and layout.
I have used various genealogy programs for decades and got this because of glowing reviews and the "interface" with Family Search. Well, the integration is nice and there are some very nice reports, but the user interface requires scollling and scrolling if you have lots of facts, media and citations for an idividual. Not only that, but the fonts used in many places are too small and data squashed to gether. The "interactive" tree is impossible to read unless you pare the number of gererations down to practically nothing. There is no way to rearrange any of the fields or groupings on the screens to reflect the way you work. For example, when editing an indiidual, the name, gender and some miscellaneous information is first, followed by media files (?), which you have to scroll through to get to "Events" and then more scrolling to "Facts" and "Labels" , scroll more ant then "Notes", with more scrolling to "Source Citations". No shortcuts, no tabs, just scroll, scroll, scroll. Tedious and a time sink to say the least. While the reports are very nice, the product lacks the ability to identify relationships other than through a report and does not consistently identify locations for the mapping function. Further, citations synched with FamilySearch lack detail and, where media from Family Search is involved, the media is not in the database, rather it is linked to the FamilySearch site. While nice-looking on the surface, the useri interface is very unsophisticated and ineffecient. The layout and functionality reminds me of early GUI interfaces that were glued on character-based programs in terms of layout. Overall, this application has the potential to be a very good program, but the shortcomings create a huge waste of time and effort. Synium needs to go to school on their competitor's products and learn. If you are a beginner, this may work well for you. I'm not and this was a waste of money for me.
