Great alternative to microsoft word
Recently ran out of my microsoft subscription, so I switched back to this tried and true!
Awesome, but…
This is a really good writing app, would strongly recommend to your average delinquent but it has a major problem, everything I write it just doesn’t get remembered and I do not know if this is a bug but please patch this? Sincerely, anonymous
No customer support
App is flawed. Some features don't work and nobody is available during the regular work hours JotterPad claims to be manning the chat feature. Also, I can't get the publish feature to work with tumblr and Wordpress.
Smart quotes? Auto dash?
This app could be so great but so many frustrating format issues are holding it back. Prior to now, I could get smart quotes (the curly kind) and automatic dash (—) to work on my iPhone, but now neither work. It’s frustration after frustration that has me regretting paying for a subscription. Really play around with this app during the 3 day trial before deciding to drop the yearly on it like I did, only to realize the app is far more irritating to use than what you already had.
Great customization, but…
I’ve used this app for forever across different devices. Getting back into writing now, I decided to give the mobile full version a go, because I like cloud support. There’s a few kinks in this app that have me debating if I should go through with the yearly subscription or end after the trial. I’ll try to sort from major to minor: 1. Version restore previews are cut so you can’t see the full length of the recent version. Why not show the very end parts of it that were most recently added instead of the beginning parts, which we already know are there? I know JotterPad has been like this for a while, but after years it’s still the same? 2. Version restoration. I work on the cloud. When I restore a cloud document, it gets sent to local. Maybe there’s some technical things I’m not understanding about this, but it’s a bit of a nuisance to have to copy the local file to the cloud after restoring. 3. UI annoyances, particularly with the Bold, Italic, and Strikethrough buttons. It seems the accepted touch radius for these buttons is EXTREMELY small, so I end up stabbing at the buttons over and over and over, and it’s not until I hit a certain pixel that the button will accept my touch. 4. More UI annoyances: I’m not sure why there’s so much space left between the words I am working on and the keyboard. It’s a bit irritating visually so I find myself dragging the screen down subconsciously, only for it to pop back upwards when I start writing. Other than that, I genuinely do love this app. It has many useful functions, and the minimalistic design makes writing feel incredibly comfortable. JotterPad truly is my writing home, but I’d like to see some more fine-tuning with it.
The best of the bunch
I’ve used Scrivener, Ulysses, even Werdsmith, and Jotterpad is my favorite out of all of them. I have it on all my devices, even my android tablet, and it syncs perfectly with google drive. The variety of templates (including several that will automatically format your novel for you), the typewriter, and the built-in dictionary and thesaurus cannot be beat. I just wish we had widgets!
SammyDuck
Although I sometimes try other writing apps, for my WordPress blog articles and my editorials for our local newspaper, I usually rely on JotterPad. Over the last couple of years it has been a real “keeper.” The text editor does not impede my flow and the dictionary/thesaurus/rhyming features are an added bonus. I’m a yearly subscriber (one of the very few subscriptions I tolerate) but would buy a lifetime subscription if it were available. I’ll guess that most who peruse the descriptions in the App Store do not realize the value added by well-made writing and formatting templates. JotterPad’s recent addition of a whole batch of useful templates “seals the deal” for me. I was once an English Composition instructor at a local community college. Wish we had had software like JotterPad to work with in those days.
