Buggy, Cumbersome Software
The software crashes frequently with large documents. I was working with a complex 130 page document and it crashed so frequently while trying to change the way it was recognizing text that it was effectively unusable. Additionally, the software chokes on watermarked documents. It chose text on a page as a bunch of different, disconnected elements so when it did conduct the OCR, the text was so out of order as to be unusable. You might as well type if yourself. For this much money, I expect more, considerably more.
United StatesCritical software to my business doesn't work in Big Sur
My previous review giave this software 5 stars! It worked so well in Catalina. It's critical to my business and apparently doesn't work (that well) in Big Sur, I'm disappointed to realize. I purposefully delayed upgrading from Catalina for several months to give the developer time to address functionality in Big Sur, but despite several recent reviews claiming it works fine in Big Sur – on my 2018 Mac Mini it does not. Very, very antsy to see a fully Big-Sur-compatible upgrade ASAP. Will be happy to award 5 stars again when that happens. For Catalina, this has been such a useful product for me. On Big Sur, it doesn't work yet.

First, I had to spend more cash on Adobe software to post process the PDF files because this product is "imprecise" in its creation of PDF documents. A document size definition of 5x8 inches created a PDF that was oversized and rejected by my publisher. And it missed a few things in book text rendered in Baskerville. Well, words that were obviously wrong and frequent scans of the letter "I" for the digit "1". Stuff like that. And the software just abends on its own while idle. Often. But, I wouldnt give up this software for anything. Hey, all software quality is sketchy these days.

I find FineReader Pro significantly more accurate than other OCR applications, especially with less-than-optimum third party scans and italic type. Negatives: Needs a user-definable dictionary. Also, updating to OS compatibility is very slow.

Been using Fine Reader OCR Pro more than 10 years, i guess, first on a PC, then on my Apple laptop when i changed over to that opperating system. As a BSA summer camp staffer, I work in the business office of the camp and use the program to scan all of the merit badge rosters into one PDF file for each week of camp. That makes it easy for me to locate information on class participation quickly and keep the records on hand on my computer readlly available for past years of camp. It's never let me down, and works exactly as advertized. I've used almost all of the options available in the program so when other OCRs are advertized on line, I don't even give them a second thought. Keep up the good work.

This has always been a quirky piece of software, but be warned that it doesn't work with Big Sur: you cannot edit or draw new areas to OCR. You have to rely on the automatic detect, which is never accurate without tweaks.

I purchased this to use for genealogy docs but also for other more mundane tasks (the journey toward a truly paperless office, for example...). I had a few relatives living in Europe in the 1800s but I don't speak the languages of the countries they lived in so my international ancestry research has been spotty at best. I did't want to spend a whole lot on OCR software but several sources recommended this app as the cream of the crop so I bit the bullet and downloaded it today... and I was absolutely thrilled to discover that it will recognize foreign languages as well as english! This is probably not unexpected in the OCR world but it has absolutely turbocharged my genealogy research! I am downloading foreign texts (articles, etc.) where I recognize the names as possible family members, running them through FineReader using the appropriate languages, then copying the text to Google Translate and - VOILA! Thank you so much for this product. It is easy. It is powerful. It is multilingual. IMHO it is worth every penny.
