UPDATE: New version might lose sync with your files and folders
APRIL 2019 This is an update to my earlier review, as the developer requested. Tagging is better now than it was. It's possible to tag the phantom version tracked inside FileBox, as well as to tag the original item(s). That's a great idea. There is now the option to create a "light" FileBox archive that does not copy or move files into the single giant Fbox data file. This is great. The caveat is that it is now very easy to lose files, or to at least lose the connection between the FBox phantom and the original. I added some folders to a "light" FBox project, and then I added some tags inside FBox. I applied the tags to the original folders using FBox, and that worked. Then, using the Finder, I corrected a misspelled word in one of the file names. I went back into FBox and found the phantom item. I used the pop-up menu to go to the original item, and FBox reported an error that the file (actually a folder) wasn't found. So if you plan on using the Finder in conjunction with FileBox, you may have troubles if you rename things, or move them between folders. -------- JUNE 2018 I’ve been looking for a better way to manage 100 tags for many thousands of files across four hard drives, a dozen disk images, plus Dropbox and Google Drive. Being able to sort files and add/remove tags is important, as is being able to find files and manage tag changes. This isn’t it, and that’s okay. What’s worth mentioning is that FBox is among the file managers that makes a full copy (not an alias) of the original files. If you have files on multiple disk images or drives, they’ll all be gathered into a signle new bigger file as the FBox data file. No disk room? Tough luck. Of course, you could always delete your originals… Second, if you have 3 TB of family videos and photos, expect that FBox will need A LOT OF TIME to copy them for its import process. A. Lot. Of. Time. Third, once the files are inside the FBox domain, they are invisible to any security software you have to watch files for viruses and such. Fourth, this will heavily impact Time Machine. A new, gigantic data file will be created by FBox and all your original files will be deleted (if you delete them). Backing up the huge new file will take a lot of time and space. Any changes can cause a lot of wasted space for Time Machine. I didn’t find that FBox was an improvement over using the Finder, Spotlight, and SmartFolders. And I’m sad about that.
Exactly what I need
It is very useful and efficient to manage files, so easy to add or remove tag for multiple files, especially for lots of files and tags. I create a few fbox files to manage books, movies, musics, and other files independently, which is extremely powerful to organize all of those files. Now I can easily find the files use a tag or serval tags or searching. Thanks for the nice work, that’s exactly waht I need.
