Useful but limited search tool
Devonsphere is a useful but limited search tool. It can search pdf and epub files using multiple alphabets. It doesn't search mobi or azw files, and doesn't have separate preferences to include epub vs. mobi vs. rtf vs. odt. And it doesn't index more than aboout 100 pages of each book, so if you know a few of your reference books mention someone-- but don't remember which books-- it's likely to miss them. It relies on exact matches or asterisks, instead of accepting truncated search terms by default.

After figuring out how to access it (clicked on a word, chose Services, then DEVONsphere Express), it’s proving to be very useful for finding all sorts of info (ie, documents, e-mails, epubs, pdf’s, etc.) hidden deep within my laptop. Also discovered ability to add new search locations such as Dropbox, increasing it’s scope. Haven’t quite figured out how to search iBooks or Photos, although I would love that capacity. Like their other app, DEVONagent Express, it also pulls up web searches along with your device searches, all in one place. And it searches very effectively within your e-mails. Highly recommend DEVONsphere Express!

When left running, the CPU on my machine revs up enough to cause the fan to kick in. Which means I turn it off. Which means i can't use it to search.... So it's not of too much use to me.

It is slowly improving in terms of performance. But it is still slow. I do not recommend the "Search while typing" feature since it slows the app to the point of unusable. Having said that, the search engine is impressive. I found stuff online and on my own documents that I would have never found using spotlight or Google (well, it would have taken me ages to find). The advanced boolean operators (NEAR/, NEXT/, etc) are fantastic. Once you try them you will start wondering why Google, Science Direct, etc do not implement them too. ORIGINAL REVIEW I am a more or less happy DevonThink and DevnAgent user. However, I always debated if using DT database for large collections made sense . DT IS A RESOURCE HOG and I am tired of re-building corrupted databases. So, I now renamed my files using a particular naming convention and defaulted to "Finder + Spotlight". I installed DS Express a few days ago. I let the indexing run overnight so it would not disrupt my work. A few things to highlight: 1) Yes, when the indexing is running the systems becomes extremely slow. They should improve memory usage. For now at least, I selected "Manual" in the indexing options (I still do that in version 1.5). 2) Not including OpenMeta search capabilities is a poor decision. I hope it is added to an update shortly (still a wish in version 1.5). 3) The search engine is PHENOMENAL. Once you start using the advanced boolean operators you will see what I mean. DSE finds everything. Your results are filtered by relevance (BTW, you can change the degree of relevance). I stopped using Spotlight for this very reason. 4) It looks to me that I can get the best of DT w/o having to load DT, which is a great think. I really hope DevonTechnologies makes the app more resource-efficient in the next update (not much of an improvement yet in v1.5). Cheers Mariano

As with all of the other Devon applications, this one works very well also. Others that use it and say that it doesn't meet their needs must be using it incorrectly, or have some other issue. I have ALL of the Devon products, and use them all daily, all day long for about 10 to 14 hours per day, depending on the day.

i am a huge fan of devonthink technologies, purchased all its product without even reading the reviews, i just trust that these people takes their customers seriously…i bought this product but it seems to be a huge memory eater and even though i have 8gb of ram it seems to be less for this prog to run even for a period of 10 minutes…i constantly have to free up the memory, so i just opted not to use this soft till the developers solve the issues which i am sure they will….soon...
