Deceptive
Great app. Deceptive subscription model.
You’ve got to be kidding…
Seriously, $500 for the basic subscription!! There’s no trial plan to see if I like it? And these reviews are obviously written by people who got paid to write them. What a joke.
Works great and the developer is very responsive
Blackout is a good controller for those who work on small to medium sized job where having instant control of all your units is worthwhile, but you don’t quite have the need, room, or budget for a full console. I found Blackout to be in that sweet spot between an analog board, which now is all but moot, and a system where you need to have serious training in order to be able to troubleshoot issues that arise. Blackout gives you the option to shift parameters with sliders, but you can also enter commands in a command line way with characters like you would on a larger console. The fact that the developer is very responsive to the individual end user is a huge given how quickly new fixtures are being added to the lighting business. It’s not an inexpensive app, but it delivers and makes you look good in the field while being able to remain nimble on your feet and ready for any new direction a production may take.
Best Thing Short of Console
2 years into using this app regularly and I’ve been so pleased. Between the helpful YouTube tutorials, Facebook Community, and Jeff’s quick help this app is a powerhouse application. Though more updates and greater improvement are still to come, this app has been so useful to so many projects I’ve worked on. With DMX control being more and more important to every production this is the app to beat for speed, controllability, and function.
Great app!
This lightning control app beats any other mobile OS based lighting control app. Works very similarly to EOS, fixture selection and parameter adjustments are far more easy than other Apps. Has way better options for fixtures and effects. This app is the most solid option for tablet based lighting control.
Just the lighting control you need
I had been using an iPad app that was OK, but didn’t allow for an easy global view, so I started using a console app that was also available for my laptop. The laptop software was super powerful but also difficult for me to grasp easily. Then someone mentioned that Blackout was available in Beta, but would be releasing soon. I gave it a shot and it just felt right. Even though it was in Beta, I could see that all the right pieces were there. When it went live there were a few hiccups, but by the second version release the main issues were ironed out and I felt like I had an everyday program that worked well with my existing hardware (An AKS+ Transmitter). The Facebook group is really helpful and the author of the software is very helpful and responsive. If you need to control 6 DMXable units or 30, brand new LEDs or regular Tungsten through dimmer packs, this software will give you the tools to make your set-up sing. (I did purchase an up to date iPad Pro, but it’s great for a lot of other software too:)
Brave new world
Blackout has made my crew so efficient. The improvement was immediate. Blackout is dragging us in to the future of lighting. So, so good...
