Copperhead is an AUv3 digital subtractive synthesizer plugin which draws its influence from the vintage synthesizers of the early 80's. Only now we have multi-note polyphony, a build in arpeggiator, and a host of integrated audio effects. Copperhead features a custom String Machine, the ability to design your own custom waveforms, as well as supporting oscillator sync and various cross modulation effects. Cross modulation is a type of FM synthesis which can be used to morph simplistic waveforms into something far more aggressive and interesting. At the heart of Copperhead are its two oscillators, which support all your traditional waveforms (SINE,SQR,SAW,TRI), as well as SuperSaw, Trapezium, and other user definable types. The app features pulse width modulation and supersaw, as well as a customisable string engine and the ability to create your own oscillator types. The Voltage Controller Filter supports the usual LP, HP, BP and Notch filters in series or parallel configuration, as well as a couple of unusual ones like Formant which allows you to sweep your cutoff to create interesting vowel sounds. Copperhead also features twin LFO's with random and one shot functionality. It also supports Cross, Ring and FM modulators, in addition to low and high shelf filters. One of the great features is the integrated audio gate, which allows you to generate stuttering audio right out of the box. Combined with effects such as Chorus, Overdrive, Delay, Reverb and Auto Pan / Tremelo, and the ability to specify effect order, you have a lot of control over your sound. If that wasn't enough, we also include a 32 step sequencer, with various mono and poly modes with direct control control of various synth elements. We have a built in Preset Manager which groups presets into banks and groups, which supports drag and drop for easy import/export of presets. You can also access your favourites from a special popup menu, or via the built in quick search facility. Copperhead now ships with over 550 presets which cover just about every instrument category you would ever need. ○ AUv3 compatible. ○ Up to 16 note polyphony. ○ 7 Oscillator wave types. ○ Sub Oscillator. ○ PW/PWM on SQR and TRP waveforms. ○ Supports SuperSaw with MIX and DETUNE. ○ XMod / Ring and FM modulations. ○ Osc Sync. ○ 6 types of VCF filter. ○ Low and High shelf on output. ○ Built in compressor. ○ Chorus, Delay, Overdrive, Reverb and Auto Pan effects. ○ Built in Audio Gate. ○ Preset Manager with Bank/Group/Preset section. ○ Supports drag and drop to import/export presets, groups and banks. ○ Supports web transfer of presets. ○ 32 step arpeggiator. ○ More than 550 built-in presets. NOTE: This is an AUv3 plugin which was designed to be hosted in DAW's such as AUM, Cubasis, GarageBand, Loopy Pro etc.
Great Synth with Fun Features
You can produce any sound you can imagine with this synth… really! Do watch the videos in the help menu for a complete tutorial. I\while Copperhead is very intuitive, it’s worth watching the vids to get the most out of it. There are amazing features. Not least is the preset banks by the amazing sound designer Spidercemides! You can essentially dump all his presets into a favorites folder. But don’t. If you decide to remove a preset from the Favorites folder you’ll end up deleting the preset from just about everywhere. A small bug which I’m sure will be fixed. I needed to reinstall the app to recover the presets. Another amazing feature is the waveform editor. It has something I’ve never seen before, a slider for each fundamental of a sound wave! This is a big deal. You can design some extraordinary sounds and learn about how sounds are made with this tool. I’ve never seen it before and i have a ton of synths. One thing missing however is a way to save the sounds you’ve designed. It will be there when you save the preset of course but it would be nice to develop an original sound library. The only very minor problem i have is the the menu diving needed to open some critical windows like ‘effects’ and ‘favorites.’ It’s only three taps to get to the window but other designers have brought you these windows a bit less clumsily. Another problem is there’s no way to access the developer’s page… if it even exists. I’m surprised because this is a major developer with an awesome offering of apps. If you hit the developer’s website link you’ll basically be forwarded to a management consultant company which I’m pretty sure is the furthest thing from music as a business can be. Overall, a great synth and an incredible value!
MPE baby!
Thank you for adding MPE—what a tremendous boon to an already great synth! I might have to go create some more Stellar Anomalies (presets) for this now—and for StringLab when I get it. Excellent!
Please test the AU version for Logic Pro on macOS
Seems to crash Logic Pro as soon as file is opened. Thanks.
Great sounds…but how do we report the bugs??
Been using it for several months as my main sound engine. But it’s got some small issues here and there, like any software. My main gripe is there’s no documented way to contact the developer. 4pockets.com goes to an blank web page. “Support” options on the App Store go to Karl Marketing…a lot of good that does. Look in the online help…no mention of support channels. Where’s the main place Paul goes to see user postings of the bugs they’ve encountered?? Anybody know?
Another winner from Paul @ 4pockets.com
One of the Hardest working devs on ios! Happy to support! Great sounding and light on cpu! Been using it everyday since buying! Thanks 🙏
The full package
Not only a very capable synth, but also supported with a detailed series of YouTube videos by the developer - concisely walking you through all of the features. This would have been my perfect first synth. I remember all too well not knowing my VCO fro my LFO and not having any sense at all how my VCF fit into the picture. I can’t even imagine how much learning time I could have save by having access to Copperhead and the matching masterclasses. The layout works as well on iPhone as iPad, both in standalone and as an Audio Unit. That makes it really suitable to use as my main workhorse synth. As with all 4Pockets app, the consistency in design ensures that learning one app transfers to all of the other ones, which is always appreciated and helps me make the most out of my music time. Highly recommended, and if you are new to synths - don’t shy away from this one because it doesn’t have that “newbie’s first synth” look. In a couple of days you’ll be synthing more than you’d ever believe possible.
I like it
Another winner from Paul. I’ve spent only a short time with it but I’m seeing a lot of possibilities and a better user experience than several of the synths I already have.
v1.15 B91 Added an awesome new preset bank from Spidericemidas. This bank features 111 new Bass, Pads/Atmos and Synth presets. Fixed a possible crash due to divide by zero when using the super saw waveform in certain circumstances. Fixed an issue where the app is not showing the proper version number when hosted as an AUv3. Fixed an issue in standalone mode where the left most key on the piano keyboard is less responsive due to system gestures.
