BandShift is a multi-band auditory filter and frequency shifter taking a new approach to manipulate the pitch of complex sound sources in realtime. The well know analog Bode frequency shifter shifts all frequencies in an input up by the same amount and thereby alters their harmonic relation and tends to produce inharmonic results. But it's perfect in dealing with transients and sounds smooth even with high amounts of down pitching. BandShift splits the spectrum in 27 bands and applies a different amount of frequency shifting to each band emulating a harmonic pitch shifting. This gives you perfect pitch shifting for all kind of drum sounds over a vast shifting range of +/- five octaves without disturbing the transients or introducing metallic distortions. The extreme range of shifting gives you access to a vast field of unknown sonic territory. The possibility to apply different shiftings on each band gives you exciting possibilities: Suppose you have a drum loop which is perfect, but the bass drum is a bit too high or too low to fit in your mix then you can easily get the bass drum shifted a bit down and the rest of the spectrum remains unchanged. But it’s applications are not limited to drum sounds, they’re only limited by your imagination. Cheap but still worth
My main complaint at the moment is that this auv3 unit doesn’t report its latency to the host. Which means AUM’s built in latency compensation gets thrown out of sync if you add this effect into any spot anywhere in your effects chain. That said, if you don’t care about latency compensation, this little app is pretty neat. I use it all the time for listening to small portions of my audio frequency.
Buggy but unique
I only came here to say, that in AUM, every time I unplug my lightning cable(which is plugged into my keyboard, etc), bandshift... Shifts itself... And all the sounds coming out of it is off pitch. Then, when my plug my cable back in again, it shifts back to the correct pitch, hopefully. Very buggy. I have to be super careful anytime I use bandshift, and check it with my spectral analysis app, to ensure it isn't giving me a bugged pitch shifted sound. But when it's working right, it's great. But when it isn't working right, and especially if you didn't know it... Ugh. Can't trust any sound you hear coming from this app. Every time I restart AUM, or reload bandshift, or any time I unplug my lightning cable, it can change the pitch. Several times, I didn't notice it until later. I build modular synths, so it can be a dozen nodes later before I realize that bandshift has been lying to me and now I gotta go back through a dozen nodes that I edited and fix them, because I had edited then based on what I heard coming out of bandshift, and bandshift was lying!!! Hours wasted. Otherwise, great app and unique in the app store I think. It’s a critical part of net workflow even despite the bugs. Use at your own risk though.
Useful for getting inside the nooks and crannies
It's a useful bandwidth-pitch-shift effect that's dedicated to its task... and...! it does more than that, it's a sampler, a modulator, and an efficient interface for exporting effected clips, once you've perfected the band pass / filter sweep. The iPhone GarageBand interface of the instrument had some issues with showing all of the tabs, but the standalone instrument works well, is entertaining, and it's intuitive enough to use with the media player feature start off with.
