Greedy business mode
After the codex update for my faction they locked half the units from the app requiring you to buy the 60$ codex to access something you used to have access to. Terrible, terrible business practice. Bleeding your players dry will drive players away from the game to something more affordable.
Unoptimized for New Players
The only *real* complaint I have with this app is that it lumps all of your unit’s wargear selections into one card, making it so that my two units of Cadian Shock Troops share a profile. This forces me to sift through compounded lines of text to find the weapon I’m using, and is somewhat inconvenient as a learner and newcomer to 40K. In addition, the Command Bunker cards don’t show how many of the weapons are in the squad itself, so I have to keep multiple mental notes of how many weapons are in each of my units, alongside strategizing and keeping track of the many stratagems at my disposal. This is yet another hurdle for new players like me, as I tend to spend a very long time making sure I’m not using too many or too little of one weapon selection. So if those are my only two grievances, then why the two stars? It’s because the official Warhammer 40K App is trumped by BattleScribe, a free app that does all of the things mentioned above and more, all the while having the gall to push a horrible business model that is very obviously not popular.
LET ME SEE RULES FOR ARMIES WITH A CODEX
Can’t wait for the day when all the codexes are out and I can only see one or two of the armies I have purchased. It will be amazing when 90% of the army contents is behind a paywall!
Great App but Too Much Greed
This app is great for army building. Has your datasheets, stratagems, and everything else you need readily available. I wouldn't mind paying a monthly fee for this app but I feel the current price is a bit much. That's not the main problem, however. The main problem is you have to buy a $60 Codex to get the code to access your army in the app. The Codex itself is outdated upon release since the points costs are wrong, and outside of a couple pages of lore, it's pointless. Not only do you have to pay $60 for a Codex, if you play multiple armies you have to buy multiple Codexes just to use your armies in the app. Then if you want to look up any other datasheets/rules for other armies to prepare against them or verify their abilities, you can't unless you, you guessed it, buy their codex. GW had a great opportunity here and they let their greed get in the way, which is why people continue to use 3rd party list building applications instead.
Legends Units not in app
I don’t get why they can’t be in the app, just mark them as Legends or disclaimer that they can’t be used in Tournaments.
A great app ruined by a greedy company
To preface this, I liked the app, it's user friendly, and has great player aspects like the command bunker, when I initially downloaded this app I was ok with the "free version" coming with a single army builder slot. My primary use for this app was a quick reference for other factions and to keep my primary list, however as more codexes are released that data is locked behind a pay wall, the only options being: buying a codex of your own or hope a friend has one with a code they're willing to share. This app's usefulness to the casual player is tied directly to the amount of information they have access to, and with each new codex locking more and more content, the usefulness of this app dwindles more and more, I suggest looking elsewhere, and giving this app a pass until they make the codexes available to everyone again.
Incomplete, and Deliberately so
Games Workshop is leaving unit data sheets out of this app deliberately, and has admitted as such to it on their Facebook page. Entries are incomplete, poorly formatted, and multiple units are missing for factions that are not Space Marines (TM), who have the highest release rate. This also leaves aside that the app is only free for now, and as the physical books drop, data will be removed from the app, requiring shelling out $25+ (since the codes are in the physical books) for each subset of data that had been removed. Avoid at all costs, because GW certainly wants to make it cost a bundle. Additional addendum: the most recent update has indicated that the Tau Empire codex is “fully complete.” This is factually untrue, and has been accompanied by multiple units being moved to “legends” status, which are no longer valid at competitive levels, will no longer receive updates of any kind, and are not included in the app in any form. These units are likewise still (as of right now) being sold through their webstore, so not only is the statement facetious, but is deliberately done to sell products for a form of play that Games Workshop cultivates, but said products cannot participate in.
