Unusable app

I really wanted to use the city bikes in Vancouver and l, despite all the bad reviews, I decided to give the app/system a try. The app is so buggy as to be unusable. On opening the app it forces you to go to ad and update webpages without the ability to cancel out. Then when trying to enter my phone number to sign up it randomly drops skips out and the entire screen changes. Sadly with so many bugs merely upon trying to sign up, I don’t fired at all comfortable actually trying to rent a bike or giving up any payment info. Sadly this is about the worst city bike app I’ve ever seen.

Price Charge Traps

Really careful with how they charge you. The Subscription shows how they charge you are really confusing. I had to pay twice the price because of this

Non transparent costs, borderline predatory pricing

Hi! I used this app as a tourist in Vancouver with one other person, we bought the day pass, which is touted on the app, switched to ebikes, not being aware that this was not included in the day rate, and ended up using 2 ebikes for about just over 3 hours each. I received a total bill of over 180 Canadian dollars for the whole rental including the day pass (70 dollars for each e bike). I was shocked at the cost, complained to Mobi about this, and was told that this information is in the Terms and Conditions and expected for 'bike sharing', meant for short term commutes and not for tourists, despite the bike docks being available at many tourist locations. To me, in comparison to other apps in other cities, which typically alert you to and ask you to confirm costs, this does not happen in the app or on the bike, we did not see any indication of accrued costs, so it was very unclear how much in costs we were accruing. On top of this, this is a bike rental (alert: sharing signaling for purposes of denying it's actually a rental), there should be a daily cap on how much can be charged for a bike. This is in my opinion, poor non transparent communication alongside unreasonable pricing in which we felt literally taken for a ride. In top of that, despite ending both rides manually and getting confirmation of this on both bikes, one bike was apparently not properly 'docked' (dock terminals are rather glitchy) and the meter kept running all night until the next morning. They refunded this part of the bill, which was for an additional 150 dollars. If you don't pay attention to the clock and the terms and conditions (we should have read them more carefully, but being on the go does not lend itself to this) a full day could run you several hundred dollars. The normal bikes were not good quality, that's why we jumped on ebikes when we saw the opportunity at another docking station. I would stay away from this service and go to a normal bike rental in Vancouver if you are in need of bikes as a tourist or visitor.

Scam

This app is a scam, you can’t stop the payments if you get to your destination but the loading dock is full. AVOID THIS APP

Fair Experience

I’ve been reading comments about how awful the app is and I have to say, it isn’t that bad when you have decent Internet connection. The registration was very simple and straight forward as well as billing and trip details. Aside from that, the app is useless lol I used Google maps to navigate to each biking station since there are plenty around the city which is nice. The actual bikes could use some upgrades but other than that it was a smooth ride which a great battery life. I rode around 25 km and didn’t break the bank. Give the app a chance. Download it while connected to fast wifi before you venture out. Screenshot your personal code and number so you can rent a bike without opening the app. They’ll send you the bill regardless. P.S. Vancouver is a biker paradise so be patient and enjoy the ride.

App worked fine

First time using on-demand bikes in Vancouver. The app worked fine. It showed me where the e-bikes were specifically which is what I was looking for. The checkout process was fairly easy (the buttons on the bikes are a little fussy but it worked without any serious problems). All in all a good experience.

Works just fine, the app has been updated

We had a great time using these bikes with a day pass on a sunny Vancouver weekend. The city rivals as the most bike lanes and accessibility in all of North America, and I’m glad I did not listen to the reviews as we were almost too put off to try them. Vs renting a bike for the day, these bikes are incredibly bulky (like any bike share system a la SF, Portland, NYC) but let you switch up your mode of transit from spot to spot at whim which makes it worth it for us. I think the negative reviews are either old or user error, or maybe even bike rental shops trying to discourage usage. Your first clue that it works just fine is that you’ll see hundreds of people using them all over the city…we figured if somehow they’re all getting bikes we’d be fine. We decided to try two day passes on one account and never had a problem, checking out bikes 8-10x through the day. Popular stations were even staffed with friendly people who were there to help anyone with issues creating accounts, returning bikes, etc.. they even offered tips on where to go To address some of the comments: - you do have to check the bike in within 30 mins on a day pass or you get charged per minute. This is in line with any of this type of system. You can dock them and check them out immediately to keep riding. We only had a problem biking the circumference of Stanley park and went over a few mins. The stations are somewhat spread out and we got stuck in a line of very slow people. It is one way (counter clock wise) and got too narrow to pass towards the end. - the app was updated a while ago and you can see a pretty accurate count of bikes at stations. Showing your own location is weird I always just had to tap my location button twice to get it to show up again - popular areas may have no more slots to put bikes and you have to find the nearest next station. If there is an attendant they’ll help you return it without a dock. It’s just the way the system works, they mention you can call if this happens and they’ll refund you. - make sure to confirm that the bike is fully pushed in when you return it. Watch the screen it will tell you your trip time and then ding.
