We are tackling the “relational poverty” isolating as many as 1 in 3 people experiencing homelessness in the US. Our approach is simple and effective: a person isolated by homelessness records a short video, audio, or text message to a family member or friend, often with the help of a referral partner or local volunteer using this app, our paper-based or online referral forms, or our 1-800-MISS-YOU hotline. Then, our network of 1,200+ digital detectives attempt to locate the loved one, deliver the message, and reunite the family. To date, we have reunited 203 families, with an average time disconnected of 20 years. 80% of reunions have led to a positive outcome, with 15-20% resulting in a person getting off-the-streets. We believe everyone is someone's somebody. Four years ago, I took a walk down Market Street in San Francisco, taking a moment to speak with every person I saw who was experiencing homelessness. I asked each person a simple question: “do you have any family or friends you’d like to reconnect with, even if you don’t know how to currently reach them?” Multiple people said yes, and I tried my best to collect as much information as I could to locate their love ones, deliver a short video message, and get back in touch with them if I found them. The process was unpredictable, unnecessarily public, and frustrating. This is the app that I wish existed then. Now, available for you to use in your communities. Miracle Messages: Volunteering is a simple app that can make a significant difference. It takes the best practices of our award-winning nonprofit, which has now reunited over 200 of our homeless neighbors with their loved ones, and packages them up for everyday volunteers and case workers at Miracle Messages’ partner sites.
