Good for drawing, bad for professional workflows
I find Pixaki great for my pixel art drawing flows, though it may not have every advanced feature. The main problem with it is that there’s no way to bulk sync your Pixaki drawings with cloud storage or version control. So for example, I’m making a game which has hundreds of art assets. If I want to tweak how a few of those look, I need to open Pixaki, import from cloud storage manually, one flow for each file, alter the files, export each file individually back to cloud storage. It’s extremely tedious and a total non starter for professional work. Which is a shame as it’s my favorite drawing app otherwise.
Best available
Without a doubt, this is the best available pixel software on the App Store at the moment. I tried a few before settling with this one, which is significantly more polished than the others. But it is still missing some key features that would drastically improve this app. Currently as it is, I am still reliant on exporting this out to Procreate or Photoshop to do finishing touches/cleanup, but I would ideally like to just use one app for my pixel work. Missing features/notes: Lasso select tool (only having a rectangle to work with is incredibly limiting) Pen tool for drawing pixel lines/arches/curves: something MS paint had Clipping masks/layers Layer Groups (currently no way to organize layers) Hiding layers should be one click, not two clicks away Naming layers (or even just color coding layers, can’t rely on the preview alone when there are tiny things in a giant canvas and you can see the preview properly under the layers) Let me do the color dropper gesture even when I’m on a reference layer Lots of small things but they would make a world difference. Having two do two clicks to get into a feature can break the workflow, so I hope you take my suggestions to heart! Thank you for bringing pixel art to the iPad <3
Great editor
the app is great and has all the features you’d need for pixel art but there are 3 things keeping me from getting the full app, the canvas always snaps into the center which is annoying when you want to work with your drawing hand in one position and you’re zoomed in but the area you need to edit is on the far side, so it be nice if it has an unattached canvas mode where you can place the canvas where ever. Also I do think the selection tool needs and option to show the size of the area selected since there are times you need to measure an small area you want to work on by either tapping on the blue selected area and have it pop up or have an option to toggle it, having the line tool show the distance in pixels youre drawing would be wonderful too like at the top bar
Amazing! Just a few issues
I love it! I just wish that when I export my work as a .psd it would work. When I open it in photoshop, the whole image gets stretched and distorted. Also the color picker sometimes turns on when I’m just slightly putting a little pressure to draw... I wish the sensitivity for the color picker to turn on is less, so I want to do a 3D type of hard push to bring it.
