Best game EVER!

I have gotten more enjoyment out of this game than any other that I have ever played. I’ve played a few. GameStop manager for almost a decade, so I have other games to compare it to. I put it down for a bit, but always pick it back up. Multiple characters to play through as. So much to do! Can not wait for the sequel, Saga Emerald Beyond releasing April 25!!

Just bought the game

I was excited but the scroll bar at the bottom of Apple phones won’t go away which makes it tough if not impossible at times to read the small text. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! thank you devs!

I gave it another try.

A while back, I wrote a review stating that I couldn’t get into the game due to its marathon battles and odd structure. I decided to go full casual and dropped the game down to the lowest difficulty. After that, I beat it in a little over 40 hours. I believe in my old review, I stated that I disliked the overworld-only structure the game has, but when I gave the game another chance, I realized that the same spirit of adventure and open world in other Saga games was present here as well. Just in a different way. The world map has numerous regions, and each region has numerous events that can be completed to experience a mini-story. Most of these mini-stories are completely inconsequential to the main plot as far as I witnessed, but some of them are entertaining nonetheless, like the one where Urpina enters a fairy cocoon and trains in the art of dual wielding for three years. My personal favorite subplot was the one with Urpina’s body double. Having to chase after your own body double and turn her misdeeds into good deeds was pure genius. I’m admittedly not the most strategic or intelligent of players, so anything above easy mode in this game is too much for me…but I’m glad the game offers a difficulty option for scrubs like myself. I enjoyed my time. Not as much as with Romancing Saga 2 or 3, but enough to do a playthrough. 4/5

Try not to laugh or cry

Honestly this game will make you forget your problems with how people fall down like pro wrestlers selling bumps, or the lazy motions for cutscene (and dungeons) approach in a popup book, which I feel works better on iPad limitations, than consoles. The united attacks and attacking enemies based on turn order helps, as well as formations. Fun try while on sale, though it helps to see this as a visual novel with a battle system (with funny theatrics like lay down for brusque slice) over a full-fledged RPG. The game does explain things though the star points (limit moves until you can afford for the team) and glimmers (learn mid battle via a lightbulb saga style) are fun to discover. However, the difficulty spikes, mage charge attacks while only one gets to absorb to boost skills, and life points recover way too slowly with no inns (you swap a character out of 2-3 battles). I did like the interrupts, but enemies that aren’t killed can attack anyway, so it kinda defeats the point if you can’t kill an enemy in one turn. However, it does help to set up the momentum formation to get more stars with every kill by the front row (switch formation if only 1-2 enemies but this and party swap can’t be done mid-battle), and snipe for easy battles by searching everywhere for an event, to get discounted skills/magic for more actions. Unfortunately, using your personal favorite formation/role (some characters have better than others for passive support abilities) and just playing to explore (ie don’t do normal/hard rated battles last) just isn’t viable. You do have some character diversity though unfortunately can’t skip repetitive mines dialogue (battle for half ore, get cheated and keep escalating your share).

Not for me.

The first 3-5 hours in Scarlet Grace were some of the most fun I’ve ever had in a turn-based RPG battle system. Turn order manipulation, applying strategies and watching everything unfold exactly how you planned, and winning battles by the skin of your teeth were exciting and invigorating. Then I realized that this was basically 90% of the game. Just endless waves of fighting baddies. At first I didn’t mind the complete removal of towns and dungeons, but after a while, Scarlet Grace’s structure began to wear on me. Every fight takes an immensely long time to complete. I once spent the second half of a lunch break at work slowly trudging through two incredibly long fights, only for a cutscene to happen and for the game to throw two more fights at me, both of them longer and more difficult than the ones I had just plowed through. My lunch break was just about over by the time I finish the other two fights, so to have the game throw two more at me just annoyed me. I should mention that the character the questionnaire gave me was Urpina, and apparently these marathon series of fights are unique to her campaign. The last thing I did was fight about 3-5 battles in the snowy location in order to pass time and build a bridge made of ice, but after those 3-5 battles, I noticed the bridge was only about halfway done being built. That’s when I dropped the game. This endless repetitive structure of ‘go to cardboard cutout landmark, interact, and then spend the next 10-30 minutes fighting’ wore on me very quickly. After 12 hours of my playthrough with Urpina, I can’t tolerate this game any longer. It’s not for me. I do still recommend this game for anybody who’s curious, because there’s a lot of good to be had, and my opinions towards this game are in the extreme minority.
