With this app for smartphones and tablets, zoom on the stained glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle and discover their signification. This version will allow you to discover freely every scene of the rose. A premium version is available with all the stained glass of the high chapel. Application developed by F. Margot, with the support of the Centre des monuments nationaux
Very useful!
I downloaded the app while waiting outside to enter and also the full version (free « purchase » within the app) since I wouldn’t have service in the stone building. You use the overview to select one of the 15 windows and then the blue dot of one of the scenes to see the image and description. You can enlarge it and go to the next scene by swiping left (or sometimes right). The creator of the app is often on site to show you how as well! Essential for seeing the images behind the structure of the altar or the higher images.
Great, once you know how to use it
I had downloaded this app prior to our visit to Saint Chappelle. I did not download the full version of the all of the windows. I found the app initially confusing to use and once in SC couldn’t really get it working. Yet as luck would have it, I met the fellow who created the app in SC!! He is one of the security people and he showed me how the basic app works. I promised him that I’d go on the app store and leave a review explaining the basic operation. When you open the app, select the Rose Window “Layout Mode.” You’ll see the grid of the Rose Window with a magnifying glass that can be moved around to select the many sections that make up the window. Each image selected has the information about that image and by selecting the blow-up of the image in the lower left hand corner, you can see it in more detail. You can’t possibly see all of the glass panes in this extraordinary chapel but you can sure enjoy it more by concentrating on the Rose Window panes. Apparently, the museum is developing a new app which will work better but I found this app - once I knew how to navigate through it - really wonderful to use while standing under the Rose Window and viewing it.
