Parents love us:

"I love this app so much. My granddaughter is struggling with reading. I heard about this app, gave it a try. We both love it so much. When my granddaughter gets stuck on a word, she just taps the screen and the elephant helps her. For those who don’t have patience with helping kids read, this app will help and be patient. I highly recommend this app. The books are also very interesting. She’s eager to read them all." – Kathy J.

"She is 6 and has struggled with reading, but Ello makes reading fun. Coupled with us encouraging and making reading fun, it becomes a great partnership and now she comes to me and asks if she can read one of her Ello books. This is a great thing after only one month. Definitely recommend. Give them a try. Our daughter has really flourished this month and made some real progress in her reading." – Jamie M.

"My daughter struggles with reading but since we downloaded Ello she enjoys reading, and it has helped her build confidence in her reading!" – Brandie D.

How it works:

To subscribe to the service, parents sign up for a free 7-day trial and then pay $9.99/month for a digital subscription. For an additional fee, parents can also have an additional five physical books mailed to their doorstep each month. Ello’s subscriptions are available at http://ello.com. Save your money and protect your child’s voice

The whole premise is “personalized, adaptive” reading guidance except it’s not… they ask for child’s respective grade and skill level and then just assign a reading level without any sort of system to determine it’s accurate. There’s also no readily available information as to what level is equivalent to or what it entails, when I mentioned this I received a rough conversion chart from support that doesn’t actually explain anything. If the assigned level isn’t right for your child you have to manually contact support to adjust accordingly which leaves children and parents feeling frustrated. Even after lowering the books we had access to were confusing for a dyslexic reader, so many of the words had only one different letter that can easily be mistaken for others like d,p or b. It states it won’t correct every word but is always listening to gauge your child’s skills. Not once did it prompt or correct words that were clearly read wrong because they were guessed because the book was too difficult. My child got increasingly frustrated because she didn’t want to have to tap on every word to check if it was correct. There’s no progress tracking, no skill or lesson summaries. Several times when we started a book it would say “you already know this rule… or this sound…” except we don’t and they would know that if they were gauging children’s starting skill or baseline reading knowledge. You’re paying $15 for AI to listen and record your child’s voice under the guise of learning. All that aside the app doesn’t even run properly. The “rewards” are over priced clothing items for the AI character, when my child wasn’t frustrated, they were bored which lead to more frustration. There are no accessibility setting like font size or fonts for dyslexic readers, more difficult books had tiny, hard to see font and support’s only answer was to use whatever zoom feature your device has. You also can’t update your own contact information you have to contact support for that as well. Save your money and protect your child’s voice and just skip this all together.

I wish…there was a setting for

So far it’s OK. I do wish that after a few times of using it that we could have the option to turn off the elephant saying EVERY SINGLE TIME you tap on a word for help “let’s sound out the word” or “let’s look at that word” I wish he would just sound out the word, without announcing that he’s doing it every time. It interrupts the flow of the story more than needed. I tried to search in the settings or options, but I didn’t see any choices to do that. Even even after just one book it’s kind of annoying. I have another app that doesn’t sound out the word, so I do really like that part of Ello. And I do like the integration of some videos to explain key concepts.

Great idea. Poorly executed.

When it works it is great. It does not work often. It can’t hear our daughter. She’s six and she was excited but constantly yelling at her iPad and us having to explain why it crashed and she lost all her points has us fed up. I think if they could work out the bugs this could be great. Customer service was responsive but the system never really worked. So sad. Sky Watson.

Did Not Meet Advertised Expectations

We got this program to help my daughter get excited about reading. The interface looks user friendly and we thought it would not be overwhelming for her. The program has glitched a lot and does not “hear” my daughter, my wife, or myself far to often. We have not gone through a whole page without it not registering anybody’s reading. We have used different microphone options and none have worked consistently. We ensured the iPad was equipped with the latest update along with the app with little luck. This has not worked as advertised. If anything it has caused greater frustration in my daughters reading confidence. Hope other users do not deal with these issues. I would have a hard time recommending this to others

Excellent idea, execution misses the mark

My 6 yr old loves this thing when it works. Sadly that’s not as often as we’d like. There is regular audio skipping often times leaving instructions unsaid. The animation will continue, but the sound stops. We’ve also had app loading issues and freezing which makes us have to force quit. Audio recognition is pretty good, but when it doesn’t pick it up right it leads to confusion and frustration. I REALLY want to love this, and I think I will when things smooth out, but right now, these hiccups can make reading time frustrating, which has the exact opposite effect that is intended.

Kids love to read!

My kids love reading and this is an amazing tool to help them gain more confidence and encourages them to read more. I just had some questions and customer service was incredible and so quick to respond. I have been very impressed with this so far!

Wants you to add your phone number

Why do I need to give my phone number to log in? Especially since I just downloaded this app?
