A Really Great Reflection Tool, Definitely Give it Shot

As a disclaimer, I’m one of those Northeastern students who has had to use SAIL for a few of my classes, especially early on in my first-year. But even now as a third-year, I’ve found the SAIL app to be a valuable tool especially for re-discovering and reflecting on my college experiences. Initially, I would just put in a few little moments here and there, sometimes even directly taken from reflection assignments in my classes. Upon using the platform more, I’ve found it’s great for seeking new opportunities, goal setting, and making connections between seemingly unrelated experiences. All this is fantastic especially if you’re preparing for job interviews or just planning for a new semester of classes. The app itself is also snappy, easy to navigate, and excels at visualizing your skill areas and where you can grow, all this makes it quite easy to start using. The platform isn't perfect, but it’s really cool to see new features become added to make it even more intuitive to record my experiences and find new ones. So other students out there, there are plenty of ways to utilize this app and however you decide to use it, use it the way that works best for you.

Great App to organize the task !

I’ve been using SAIL app for a while and it’s been really helpful to organize my tasks and see my various plans at one place. I’m using it more of like a scheduling tool but it’s also nice to track for those who wants to track what is going on at the campus such as events, courses or gatherings. It’s something that you can personalise at individual level. So if you want to put some opportunities or some goals, you can set a specific timing for them and see if you achieved your goals timely or you need to re-schedule them.

Start your reflection journey today!

The SAIL App is an amazing tool to help you start a journey of reflection and learning across life experiences. As a Northeastern student, I have used it to mark moments I have had that have been especially meaningful to me, or set a goal for myself white entering milestones that will help me reach it. It’s an especially good feeling to revisit those moments and look over the skills you associated with them during your initial reflection and examining how you have grown over time thanks to the visualization the app offers!

Quantifying Lifelong Learning with SAIL

As a graduate👨🏾‍🎓 #HereatNU🐾 SAIL is a tool I use to capture my metacognitive learning moments that happen everywhere. I love the integration of data visualizations with the timeline and mosaic options as well as the ‘My Story’ feature! We are entering an Age of Humanics where Data doesn't lie, It tells a story.

The one app every Northeastern student needs

I love SAIL because it has everything I could need in one place - it keeps track of all the events I attend, including notes I add to those, it gives me suggestions for events and helps me expand my Northeastern network.

helpful! but know you get what you put in

I’ve had an about-face with this app, which has undergone significant changes in the past few years. When I was first introduced to it freshman year (I’m now a 4th year), I was confused by its purpose and I found the interface overwhelming. My Explore (undeclared) advisor told our class that SAIL was looking for student advisors, and I figured that if I may have to use it in the future (to clarify, it’s now fully optional), I shouldn’t complain if I haven’t at least tried to make it better when given the opportunity. So, disclaimer, I’m on the student advisory board, and I now actually find it useful, haha. Below I’ll try to explain more about its why & how. SAIL can have multiple purposes. The ones that stand out to me are: - reflection: you can log moments in your life that you wanna remember - for people in the student group, that usually ranges from making a family dish you love (if you want, you can categorize that as wellness) or hiking with NUHOC (also wellness) to academic-related “ah-ha!” moments (intellectual, prob) or a co-op milestone (professional, civic), etc. Can be anything, really - whatever you want, however short/long you want, categorized however you want, and you can add pictures. You can even fit an entire long essay in there. You can also log goals, with timelines, checkpoints, photos and videos, etc, to help you stay on track when training for a half-marathon, finishing an art piece, or learning Python. SAIL allows you to remember personal and professional moments, and depending on how you use it, it may help you reflect on yourself, your past experiences, and what you want going forward. *Privacy settings can be private, public, or advisor-only (you choose). My default is private, so that every moment/goal/opportunity logged is auto-set to private, but I can also individually change certain moments/goals/opps’ privacy settings to make them public or advisor-only access. Someone would still have to actively search me to see them. If you want an example of a timeline, feel free to search me and/or add me to your network (I’m Kayla Vestergaard). Most of my “moments” are private due to co-op confidentiality agreements - my supervisor at my first co-op had me organize meeting notes in SAIL, with me adding pics of the whiteboard walls because it was easy for us to remember important info that way. I’m also going to be adding to private settings for this second co-op I’m on now, but you may still get how it works from a glance. - opportunity-finding: Usually seen as webinars, group hikes/yoga/etc, club events, resume-reviews, and classes. You can easily search for them, add them to your timeline, and later add your own “moments” to them, kind of like a folder. -interview prep in the form of strength & weakness finding: As you log stuff, you can tag it under one of many already-available categories such as “help-seeking,” “independence/autonomy,” “aesthetic appreciation”, etc, or you can add your own tags. Later, you can go back through your skill tags and see all the examples of times (“moments”) where you grew there. You can also see a visual representation of the list of skills you’ve logged, so the skills you’ve logged the most have the longest horizontal bars, etc. Mine looks a bit like DNA, because I have logged or am stronger in certain skills and I haven’t logged/am weaker in others. - networking: Newer, the purpose is to be able to, say, reach out to someone who had a co-op you’re interested in to find out how it went/ if it’s a good fit for you, or talk with someone with similar club or career interests, or explore what other students have done (if parts of their timeline are public, you can check it out). This all must sound complicated if you haven’t used SAIL much, but the more you explore it, the more it makes sense. I also think it’s much easier to understand if you take a tour of the laptop version first. While the phone interface is now much simpler than it used to be (whew!), I still personally prefer to see my timeline laid out horizontally, so I generally use SAIL on my laptop (you can login online after a search for NU SAIL). There are other things you can do, too, but the above tools are what I use often. Last thing to note - donor funds are often tied to specific projects. It’s not a fund-this-app-project or fund-UHCS scenario; the NU admin who actively choose each year to underfund UHCS and other essential services are doing so because, unrelated to separately-funded projects, the admin doesn’t prioritize UHCS and other services the way we students want them to. 🙃 If you wanna see our incredible operating surplus ($136 mil in FY19) and think of using it as justification for the advocacy of a boost in essential services (please do!!!), you can find NU’s financial statements with a quick search. Don’t use the endowment numbers, because nearly all of those funds are tied up in donor contracts. (Yea, I imagine this pandemic will really cut into NU’s profit for at least the next year, but still.)
