I built Kanji Book to aid in my own learning of kanji. I wanted something that would let me learn the 2136 jōyō kanji at my own pace. I was inspired by Japanese style journals which extensively use highlighters and stickers to brighten up the otherwise dull contents. In Kanji Book, you'll build your own workbook which tracks your progress visually. You can learn as many kanji as you want each day. I find that 2 or 3 is a good cadence. I tend to play 3 or 4 times a day, whenever I can find a spare 5 minutes. I try to use my phone as a tool, not a distraction. I hope you find some value in Kanji Book. Let me know how many you learn! As you play, the language of the workbook changes to reflect your knowledge. Practice all aspects of kanji: readings, drawing, recall, definition, and recollection. Use your Kanji Book as simple flashcards or test yourself with 25 random questions. Once you have enough kanji to form compound kanji vocabulary words, you'll end each session with a grid of kanji which you can use to form vocabulary words.
Trash
Very unhelpful. Doesn’t provide name of the kanji. Also when your stuck with 29 kanji to try and figure out a compound pair, the hint is worse then useless. Try giving it to the person MAYBE? so they do t have to quit and retry it again and again
Feature request…
I love how straightforward this app is…but s couple more features would take it to another level: 1) Regarding the stroke hints, if a kanji has a radical that’s been previously taught, give that radical/kanji as a hint. Even native Japanese speakers learn kanji based on component radicals. 2) The ability to edit my list and add kanji learned outside the app. I’ve learned so many new kanji since starting to use this app and it’d be cool to see that reflected.
Super efficient!
This has helped me so much and has given me a lot of motivation! I really recommend it if you want a fast and efficient way of learning kanji!
Awesome app for studying kanji!
TLDR- great app, free and better than Duolingo for learning kanji. Only wish for readings of compound words. Been studying Japanese off and on for a couple years (mostly through Duolingo) and learning kanji has been a hassle. While Duolingo’s new kanji modules are a sorely-needed addition to the Japanese course, they’re also very restrictive and too repetitive. I’m enjoying this app because the UI is clean and easy to navigate, and I’m able to take on new kanji whenever I feel ready. The only thing I feel is missing from this app is the reading of words that are compounds of two or more kanji characters. It’s so cool that there’s a dedicated section for practicing these compound words but I’m left wondering which reading of the kanji characters is the correct one, especially if it’s a new (compound) word for me. I hope that’s something you can add in a future update. Regardless, thank you for making and sharing this app with others who’re trying to find a good Japanese study tool!
Great tool!
A great tool for beginners!!
Great, engaging, educational!
Super fun, clear, simple, and you can learn at your own pace. A few small things I don’t like: no choice between kun or on, no audio pronounciation, and no information on radicals. But very enjoyable.
Kanji made fun and cute!
I just started and already know about 300+ kanji going in. I love how it is self paced, no timers, you can revisit cards as often as you like (with cute incentives), and the program shows you the stroke order! My favorite little surprise was the compound words game where you can build your vocabulary and discover just how practical a pictographic text can be (no furigana given, but I have my jisho for that). I would have liked audio, but if you know your hiragana going into using this app, you are SET. Love this product! As a teacher of languages myself, I highly recommend it. Thank you for making and keeping it free!
Fix for not seeing stroke hints on some devices.
