GRE® Flashcards by Kaplan

If you have a Kaplan account from purchasing the GRE study guide, you have access to all of the vocabulary cards for free within this app. These are the same “cards” as you can buy to supplement your book for $12 on Amazon (I wish I would’ve known...). While this is super helpful to see overall how well you remember the set in its entirety, I believe Kaplan is missing out on a multitude of enhancements that would greatly assist users. Aspects I would like to see added include the ability to only review the words selected as “unsure” or “don’t know” (very important) and the ability to sort words into decks with similar definitions (very helpful). To go an extra step, please include root words and their meaning. All in all, if you do not want to additionally purchase the flashcards or lug them around, this is great to be able to pull up and flip through for those moments you are waiting around in your day.

It is so aggravating that each time you leave the app the deck refreshes. This makes it impossible to review the vocabulary since each time you open the app you have to create a new deck and the 500 words available are reshuffled each time. I wish there had been more though my put into this app as it simply isn’t functional.

Would not go for it unless you’re willing to spend money ($20). Otherwise you get 50 words starting with “A-“, some simple, some seemingly unnecessary, some possibly helpful, but if you want more than just 50 Flashcards, then you have to pay.

This is a very useful app. While taking practice tests (from both Kaplan and ETS) and the real test, I frequently came across words included in these 500, indicating that Kaplan did its research. Offline access is a big pro, making it handy and readily available. You only need to log in once, and then you can access it anytime anywhere, provided you have a charged smartphone. That said, it's up to you to decide whether you'd pay 20 bucks for it. You can find similar GRE word sets on Quizlet, Memrise, etc., which have free offline apps as well. I paid for one of their prep courses, and access to the flashcards app was included as part of the deal. Each card has the word, part of speech, and pronunciation(s) on one side, and meaning, example sentence, and synonyms on the other. This makes the cards quite comprehensive. You can mark each card "Know", "Unsure", or "Don't Know", and create future decks using cards of one or more of these categories. A few feature tweaks I'd recommend are to add a search feature (to make it easy to look up cards), and make it possible to create decks containing just a set number of cards (10, 20, etc.), because working with all 500 cards to begin with is daunting.

Several years ago I paid for the Kaplan GRE vocabulary flashcards app with 500 words. Now I'm getting a message that says it will not be supported in the future unless Kaplan updates the app. Rather than updating the app that people had already paid for, Kaplan is requesting people download a new app and pay for the GRE vocab cards again. If this is any indication of how they will maintain this app moving forward, best not waste your money!

Won't keep track of the words you learned once you close the app! You have to create a new deck every time!!!!
