Highly acclaimed in its four print editions, Bryan A. Garner's Garner's Modern English Usage is now available on your iPhone and iPad. This extraordinary reference tool contains over 8,000 entries and essays that reflect usage lexicography at its finest. Designed with the mobile user in mind, Garner's Modern English Usage is searchable, eminently navigable, and fully citable. GMEU is the liveliest and most compulsively readable reference work for writers of our time. It delights while providing instruction on skillful, persuasive, and vivid prose. Garner liberates English from two extremes: both from the hidebound "purists" who mistakenly believe that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted. The judgments here are backed up not just by a lifetime of study but also by an empirical grounding in the largest linguistic corpora ever available. Garner has made extensive use of big data to include ratios of standard terms as compared against variants in modern print sources. No other resource provides as comprehensive, reliable, and empirical a guide to current English usage. If you're concerned with writing and editing, GMEU will prove invaluable to you. Garner illustrates with actual examples, cited with chapter and verse, all the linguistic blunders that modern writers and speakers are prone to, whether in word choice, syntax, phrasing, punctuation, or pronunciation. No matter how knowledgeable you may already be, you're sure to learn from every single entry of this resource. FEATURES * Easy-to-use search tools bring up words effortlessly * Voice search finds what you're looking for without having to type * Text is citable * Favorites feature to create a custom list of words * Usage quizzes test your knowledge with questions written by Bryan Garner
My favorite app.. but one thing
A near-perfect app, and one simple change would eliminate the “near.” Make a random entry button! My favorite part of the app is to go down an entry rabbit hole. How exciting if, like Wikipedia, one could press a button and be brought to an entry that perhaps they would not have stumbled across otherwise. This would be an easy add, please consider!
Garner's Modern English Usage is the gold standard—& this is a joy to use to prove your friends wron
Garner's Modern English Usage app is a joy to use. You can search just about any topic that is vexxing you (e.g., "comprise" versus "constitute") and find a resolution along with a detailed explanation and usage statistics. When you're in a grammar debate, you can take a screenshot and text it to your friends proving them wrong. What could be better than that?
The information packed into this app can solve any usage dilemma
People who care about words suddenly find their brains self-flagellating over the smallest issues. Constitute versus comprise? Is impact a verb?Starting a sentence with however? The beauty of Garner’s Modern English Usage is that if you are pondering it, Bryan Garner has already thought about it and written a beautiful, well-thought-out entry on the topic. Having this available on your phone will solve almost any usage dilemma. It is a great value. I turn to it at least three times a week. I hope that it stays updated. Highly recommend. I expect to get this app for every lawyer in my office.
Extremely Useful and Portable
An excellent reference work. The application is quite convenient; unlike the book, you can carry it with you wherever you go. Very fast and efficient for looking up particular words and phrases, which is the primary task for a usage guide. Worth the money. Highly recommended.
The Best
Useful and outstanding. One of the few works that I have in both print and electronic editions.
Love GMEU
GMEU is the incomparable source for American English usage. I keep the book at my desk at work, but with the pandemic I needed something for home. I really like the app, but have two issues. 1. As many have mentioned, the text size should be adjustable. 2. I can’t figure out how to use the Favorites list! I’ve tried everything and nothing works. I’m quite disappointed because I was really looking forward to using that aspect.
Great content, app stopped working in iOS 13
I’m leaving this review to, I hope, get someone’s attention. I have, and have read, all of Garner’s books and they’re all great. No issue there. But the app has suddenly stopped working on 2 phones and 2 iPads I have running iOS 13. The app appears not to have been updated in a year. I’ll update the review if this is fixed.
Bug Fixes.
