Version 2.43.1 introduces a critical new bug

Downgrading the app to two stars because Spendesk has created two new bugs in the app. The critical bug is that the app incorrectly lists individual charges from the Spendesk Visa card. I have multiple Uber charges where the Spendesk app incorrectly shows a higher amount than the actual charge. The Spendesk app incorrectly shows the amount as as little as $0.47 and as much as $2.55. There is no pattern other than over the past 6 days, more than 75% of my Uber transactions are incorrect (all higher) in the Spendesk app than the actual amount charged by Uber and shown on the Uber receipt. The second new bug is that the app randomly changes the expense category when you edit the description or vice-versa. The third bug is that the app randomly crashes and closes. A fourth bug that remains unfixed for months is that the Spendesk app incorrectly populates the “description” field with the name of the vendor. This should be a simple bug to fix.

Downgrading to 2 Stars - Bugs, Bugs, Bugs

I previously rated the Spendesk app 3 stars due to a multitude of bugs with the wrong date ALWAYS populating when you submit an expense request, random foreign currencies being used (i.e. the optical character recognition has difficulty recognizing non USD currency symbols on scanned / uploaded receipts about 15-20% if the time. I am now downgrading to 2 stars because I just received the purple Visa card, and although it truly is one tap to activate the card in the app, it’s not possible to set or change a PIN for the card. All you get is the spinning purple wheel of death on a blank white screen after you tap “create a PIN” or “change my PIN.” And of course, there is no way to contact support in the app. So I currently have an unusable business Visa card. Spendesk has soooooo much promise. It is truly pretty easy and intuitive, other than all of the manual date and currency corrections and unfixable problems like this PIN bug. Yes, the app is the most current version. Yes, my iOS is the most current version. Yes, my WiFi and cellular data networks have max signals, and yes, the rest of the app loads quickly (and literally every other app and browser loads quickly and functions correctly).

Would be 5 stars if they fix the bugs

Overall, a decent app, but there are several time-water bugs they need to fix, including: Date is ALWAYS wrong when the app extracts data from scanned receipts. 95% of the time, the app uses yesterday’s date instead of the date that actually appears on the date or the date when you create an expense item. Sometimes the date is 2 days previous, and one time the app used 1/1/2020! The date is NEVER correct. Literally never. As a result, you have to manually correct the date on every expense. This bug has existed for the full year that I have used Spendesk, and it happens no matter which city/time zone I am in anywhere in the world. The date is always at least one day off regardless of which side of the international dateline I am on. Time stamp when you create an expense is always incorrect, too. I just noticed this yesterday, so I’m not sure whether this is a new bug or not. I noticed yesterday that when I created an expense item, the date stamp in the app was 4 hours earlier (the app said that I created it 4 hours earlier immediately after I created it). The time stamp was also 4 hours before the expense occurred, in this case a Lyft ride! Today I had two expenses that the timestamp was 1 hour earlier than when I created the expense. I’m in the same city and time zone, so that’s not the cause of the error. It has nothing to do with date/time settings on the phone, time zone/city where you are physically present, etc. the app just always populates the incorrect date and time. Not a bug per se, but annoying - when you switch from the Spendesk app to another app, like your mail to screen grab a receipt, when you switch back to the Spendesk app, it has to use Face ID to reopen the app, even if you just switch apps for a couple of seconds. I get the idea of keeping your expense data secure, but the app doesn’t need to (and shouldn’t) lock simply because you switched to another app for a few seconds or less. No, it’s not the auto lock settings on the phone - it’s the Spendesk app. Feature request: allow users to edit an expense that has not yet been approved. You can’t do this today, so once you have submitted an expense, you cannot edit it at all. You have to delete it and create a new expense instead.

Software company that can’t write software

The app sets the date of the expense a day behind the date on the receipt… every time. They claim it’s an issue with their AI they can’t resolve. If you can’t fix your AI, don’t put it into production with customers and demand they put on extra time to work around it. They should pay me a quarter for every date I have to fix.

Mostly good but lots of bugs

What’s good: The ability to quickly upload or take photos of receipts works great. I like that the app also lets you have different business entities to make it easier to submit expenses to the correct entity. What’s not good: When you upload an expense in a foreign currency, the app lists your expenses in your home currency, and this makes it difficult to quickly locate an expense from a long list of expenses. For example, if you create an expense for a €20, the app displays the expense in your list of pending, approved, or paid expenses in $ (if that a your home currency). If I need to search for that €20 expense later, I have to know the approximate exchange rate to figure out which expense is the one I’m looking for. This is difficult when you have multiple expenses for the same thing, like taxi or ride share expenses that are all between 18-22 euros, as an example. The bugs: These are really annoying because you have to manually correct them on literally EVERY expense entry. - the app is unable to recognize the € symbol or the word “euro” when it scans a receipt. 100% if the time, the app incorrectly assigns £ or $ to scanned receipts that clearly display €. Yesterday, the app incorrectly applied a currency I have never encountered. This is a huge issue for businesses, because it means that you will reimburse too much or too little. - The app ALWAYS assigns the wrong date to literally every expense. The date is almost always 1 day in the past and sometimes two. This week I even had an expense where the app assigned a date of September 1, 2015. - lately, the app wrongly says there is a duplicate expense when there is not. I just arrived at the airport and created a new expense for the taxi ride to the airport, and the app said that my expense was a duplicate of an expense from 7 hours ago (when I was asleep and had not even gotten into a taxi). I checked the list of expenses to see whether there was one for the same amount, but there wasn’t. I submitted the receipt, and sure enough, there is only the one, correct expense I just created - no duplicate. These bugs are consistent, and they’re annoying. I’m surprised the developers haven’t tested the app and discovered these bugs because they’re existed for quite a long time. It’s frustrating to have to manually correct currency and date on every expense. If the developers fix these bugs, the app would be a 5-star app.
