DoT, Call Before u Dig: Read Before u Install

The Department of Telecommunication's "Call Before U Dig" application is a prime example of the government's incompetence when it comes to addressing the needs of its citizens. Despite its aim to prevent accidents related to underground cables and pipes, the application falls flat in terms of functionality and accessibility. The interface of the application is not only cumbersome but also unintuitive, making it a struggle for the average user to navigate. This glitchy and poorly designed application is a significant concern, especially as it is meant for the general public, who may not have the technical expertise or familiarity with such applications. Moreover, the application's reliance on internet connectivity is a glaring oversight, given that only a meager 34% of the population in the country has access to the internet. This exclusionary design is a clear indication of the government's lack of awareness of the ground realities of its citizens. Furthermore, the lack of promotion or advertising campaigns for the application is a significant shortcoming on the part of the government. The government's failure to leverage traditional media, such as television, radio, or newspapers, to reach a broader audience, is a clear indication of its limited approach towards digital initiatives. The requirement of personal information, such as name, phone number, and location, for the application is a serious breach of privacy. The government's failure to provide clarity on how this data will be stored, used, and protected is concerning, considering the government's track record of misusing personal data. The application's limited scope, which only covers underground cables and pipes, is a significant drawback. The exclusion of other critical infrastructure, such as gas pipelines and electrical lines, is a severe oversight. As accidents involving other infrastructure can be just as dangerous and costly, the narrow focus of the application is a significant concern. Moreover, the application places an unwarranted burden on the general public to prevent accidents. It is the responsibility of the government and its agencies to ensure public safety, including the safety of infrastructure. The government should invest in modern infrastructure, such as smart grids, to prevent accidents proactively, rather than relying on citizens to prevent them. Finally, the "Call Before U Dig" application is yet another example of the government's misplaced priorities. The Modi government has a history of prioritizing initiatives that benefit large corporations and the wealthy, rather than the general public. The development of an application that primarily benefits telecom companies and contractors is a clear indication of this misplaced focus. In conclusion, the "Call Before U Dig" application is an ill-conceived initiative that highlights the government's lack of understanding of the needs of its citizens. The application's clunky interface, limited accessibility, privacy concerns, narrow scope, and misplaced priorities raise serious concerns about the government's ability to address the needs of its citizens. The government should prioritize investments in modern infrastructure and proactive measures to ensure public safety, rather than relying on poorly executed applications that place undue burden on the general public.
