OK
It’s good when it works. But that when is fairly irritatingly interrupted. Regularly logs me out. Says books need to be ‘updated’ but they then won’t redownload for ages/if at all so I can’t finish the book I’m currently reading. The update issue also affects books I haven’t started yet and they disappear from my downloads list. What on earth needs updating? Adjusting font size (to make smaller) often doesn’t work at all meaning sometimes I’m left with text that’s too large for my preference. At least better than being the other way round.
Borderline unusable
This is a great concept, and a reasonable price, and there is a great back catalogue to choose from. Sadly, the app itself is dreadful. The search function is iffy, so searching for an author will bring up other names. Rarely, if ever, do I open the app and find myself in the same place as I left off- it will jump all over the place. The bookmark function is terrible and also unreliable- sometimes clicking on it will only bring up the border around the page. This is very annoying as it’s often the only reliable way to save your page. One book I was reading got to chapter 8, then jumped to chapter 5, then carried on to 10, meaning a large chunk of the story was missing. Finally, the app logs you out every 24 hours, meaning you have to sign back in on a daily basis. If all these things could be fixed it would be a brilliant concept, sadly it’s been put together with zero regard for the user. It seems like a cynical cash grab, and I’d expect better from a large company. It’s very frustrating to go from using the kindle app to this trash, and the reading experience is totally ruined by the technical issues. Poor show, Harper Collins.
The app
I am unable to access the app it keeps saying that my account is inactive. This is not the case so I fail to understand why I can not use the app when I am paying for it.
Some teething problems, but overall very good
I had some initial problems with not being able to sign in, but the help provided when I contacted the company was excellent. The choice of books is excellent, and has been invaluable whilst libraries have been closed during lockdown. Now they’re open again, but I will still be using the app as I find reading romance books in ebook form to be so handy. The interface could perhaps be better - not a huge fan of the vertical scrolling, and the choice of fonts is limited. However, these are minor problems. I’ve really appreciated the chance to read books by authors I’m not familiar with, as well as old favourites. For someone who reads a lot of romance it’s good value for money.
Still problems with login and freezing pages.
Despite feeding back early on in my subscription - and promises to sort out the glitches, they are still happening! 1. I am still being continually bounced out of the app and having to login again. 2. On my iPad, the app freezes regularly (sometimes half a dozen times in the one session and I have to close out and sign back in. 3. The app then seems to fail to remember where I was. 4. Quite often the font size cannot be altered and the right hand slider to negotiate back and forth in the book fails to work and it is so frustrating. I am happy with the App otherwise- although I still think a list of the authors included in the app would be useful.
Mmm Great Concept Poorly Executed
What I like: I can get lots of books on tap. What I don’t like: You can’t delete the book after reading it only cancel the download. That is going to get really old very fast. You have to keep signing in. Don’t have to do this with any other app so why this one. I can understand if you are on a new device but as long as you are paying you should be logged in. The font size doesn’t work. I have read some with such tiny writing I nearly gave up. It shouldn’t be beyond the wit of the developers to do this. The app keeps causing my iPad to dim and I have to go into my iPad setting constantly to reset it. M&B have form with releasing stuff before it is ready e.g. their new website a few years ago. Good concept poorly executed.
Like it but needs improving
I love the concept of the app but it’s so frustrating to use. I use it on my iPad so I’ve got the larger screen, but pages freeze on me, it doesn’t always pick up where I left off when I reload the app. Other times it crashes on me too, so it takes twice as long to read a book as it keeps freezing or crashing. It would be great to see how far along in the book you are, and as someone else mentioned to show if it’s been read in your book library. The book shelves with all the various books is a good idea but at the moment there are overlaps between categories and shelves. It’d also be good to see how recent or old a book is when it’s on the shelf. I think it could be a great app but there’s still issues that need fixing with it. I’m going to try and persevere for another month to see if it improves.
