BEST language app

I so rarely care enough about an app to write a review, but this is the app I’ve been dreaming of. A functioning placement test, new words, and actual progression unlike most language apps that force you to fixate on the same phrases like “I eat the apple” for three weeks. My favorite part is how you can answer each prompt vocally - my biggest area of weakness is pronunciation and this has helped so much. I’m only a few days into the free trial and already my vocabulary has expanded drastically. Totally worth the money. Amazing app.

I paid 80 dollars but it won’t let me access

The program keeps asking me to sign up for a free 14 day trial to use the product. I’ve already done the 14 day trial and have been charged the 80 dollars for a yearly subscription. They have my money so it would be nice to be able to use the product.

Needs more Sentences

I’m learning German, and I really love how this app gives you each word in context. I think that really differentiates it from your average flashcard app. But I think that learning words in multiple contexts is considerably more effective even than that. If each vocab word had at least 2-3 different sentences using it, one of which would randomly pop up when you’re presented with the word, and which you’d cycle through, I think that would make retention of the words much better.

Careful!!!

—- Update —- Lingvist replied to this review, but unfortunately they did not address any of my concerns. Original review is below. App is just ‘ok’, but after I cancelled my subscription, Lingvist renewed my subscription for $79.99, I made an Apple claim and was reimbursed. App was not used and not accessible. Then, kept the app on my phone, and Lingvist AGAIN renewed my subscription one year later, without my permission. Made another Apple claim and was denied. This time I deleted the app from my phone. A bit scammy!!!

They are trying to skirt Apple’s payment system

I signed up for the monthly plan. The app didn’t register my payment even though I had clearly paid. I contacted support. The gave me a “voucher” which doesn’t make any sense, given that I already paid. They told me to cancel my Apple subscription and consider one of their web plans. Why? They offer an Apple subscription. I already have that. I didn’t cancel my Apple subscription. It worked for 1 extra cycle. I thought all was well and that they decided to stop their shenanigans. Nope! My subscription just renewed today, and guess what? The app tells me my free trial is over and locked me out. Yes, let me make that clear — __ I just paid for another month, but the app locked me out. __ To the developers - pick a lane. Either only offer a web subscription or properly honor the Apple subscription that you are offering. Both of those are legit, honest, ethical. What you are doing instead is a bait and switch. It is dishonest, unethical, immoral. It is a shame that you chose to be this way. Your product is good and useful. I would have gladly paid for it if you would have just taken my money without trying to hustle me.

Not sure about continuing

I had a free trial. I don’t remember how long it was or how I got it to be honest because it lasted a while. I like learning multiple different languages. I saw some people talking about how Lingvist is Duolingo for adults. I don’t even understand the comparison because they teach in two completely different ways. I’ve done my fair share of apps to learn languages and I don’t know if any really help in the way they think they do? Clearly it’s just my opinion in how it helps me. I used it to practice Norwegian and Korean. Focusing solely on my experience with this app, I don’t know if I can say either really helped me with grammar? Both of the languages have nuances in a sense where very similar vocabulary is used but it may be spelled differently or it’s dependent upon the tone of formality used. I will say, I was happy to see that in the Korean lessons, they noted the formality to be used. On the other hand, with both languages, there was no context or formal introduction to the words? I used to like Memrise for this specific reason. You would learn vocabulary and gradually work up to it being used in a sentence. It used to give you the chance to understand context. Lingvist just feels like a list of vocabulary words set in front of you that you have to memorize and it leaves it at that. There aren’t really quizzes or anything to test rapid recall or some way to really gauge it? It’s just either you remember or you don’t. It doesn’t feel all that engaging to me is I guess the way I would sum it up. I’m thankful for the free trial I had because it seems you can’t use a single thing in the app without some form of subscription or free trial active so there’s that. I’m glad there are people getting so much out of it but it just doesn’t seem to have benefited me all that much.

24 hours not enough trial

After one day the app makes you provide payment info. NOT happening. I’m very much happy to consider a subscription or one-time payment, b/c of course. But don’t put the onus on your potential client or customer to *remember to reach out* if they don’t want to continue. This understandably makes a lot of us avoid you
