RaysWeather.Com has been the go-to weather source for Western North Carolina and Southwest Virginia for 22 years. The re-release of the App puts Ray's Forecast, over 60 weather stations, 30 webcams, and 10 custom radar loops in your pocket. And don't forget the Golf-o-Meter, Snowman-O-Mometer, and Photo of the Day. It's all there.
Correction of a prior review
One morning, while attempting to check the weather on the Rays Weather App, I became totally frustrated by no updated information. I soon realized that the problem was my phone, as it needed to be reset. Since then, updates have been right on time and accurate for our area! We love their calendars and have given many as gifts! Five stars!
Fabulous app, Ray is so accurate
I have followed this weather guy for maybe 30 years and he is unfailingly accurate and now that he has built a larger team and has an app, I am ever more satisfied. I read all the complaints here on the low star reviews and those must be from people who are 80 years old and don't know how to use an app because everything they complain about you can fix yourself in the personalized settings for the app.
Good forecasts; sorry app
Updated forecasts are issued twice a day or sometimes more often. But the app keeps showing the same forecast for days. The only way way to force it to fetch the updated forecast seems to be to totally close the app, not just switch to some other app and come back. It would be a decent app if only it worked.
Stick with the (free) browser version
Legacy users are irked by paying to download the app and then being given the same service as the free browser version (including large ads across the app), but the app (required to access subscription content) itself is problematic even for paid users — the UX is clunky and awkward to navigate, filled with ads, and slow to load and crashes even on the iPhone 15 and across recent iOS updates. You NEED to download the app to access favorites, which is an issue for those not living in Boone, and that requires a subscription for premium services, which really only gives Boone users access to a snow map and other users a retroactive “benefit” of not having to click multiple times to see their local weather — which can only be done through the app — and was historically included with the app download fee. I understand the desire to further monetize the service, but failing to survey current users or grandfather them in and then putting out a janky app was just bad business. We should all get our money back from Ray, and Ray should get his back from whatever crappy app dev he used.
Loved for years
Rays has been great for accurate forecast in Boone for years. The transition is a little buggy but it will work out. I appreciate the info for the past 20+ years.
Doesn’t show asheville weather
New app design forces me to look at Boone weather by default, and it takes many taps to look at asheville weather. This appears to be in deference to their new paid subscription service which of course makes viewing asheville weather easy by allowing “favorites.” Edit: the best workaround I can find is to tap on the Map button and then choose asheville. Glad to find it, but it’s still not right that easily getting to the correct forecast for my area requires a subscription.
wait to purchase until app updates!
long time ray’s fan here. i bought the subscription without hesitation and everything was good until i had to use the app for access to the members-only account. the app freezes up almost every time it is opened and i have to restart my phone to use the app again…. total pain. i’m back to looking at the (limited) forecast through the browser.
