Ancient oracle meets modern classic! Explore an interactive English version of "The I Ching or Book of Changes" by Richard Wilhelm, edited by Hellmut Wilhelm, and translated by Cary F. Baynes, using a coin oracle or yarrow stalks, and an integrated journal. NOTE: The text is only in English. The I Ching, or Book of Changes, a common source for both Confucianist and Taoist philosophy, is one of the first efforts of the human mind to place itself within the universe. It has exerted a living influence in China for 3,000 years, and interest in it has been rapidly spreading in the West. “Princeton's Bollingen edition—still regarded as the best and most authentic by I Ching aficionados.” The complete work is available in three books. Book I is included with the I Ching or Book of Changes app. Book I includes Judgments pertaining to the diagrams as a whole, the line texts, and the Great Images. Book II and III are available for additional in-app purchase. Book II: The Material Contains the Shuo Koa and the Ta Chuan from the Ten Wings, plus The Structure of the Hexagrams. Book III: The Commentaries Contains passages from the Ten Wings considered commentary to the texts, and On Consulting the Oracle. Text © 1950, 1967, renewed 1977 by Princeton University Press. Wilhelm’s translation
This app has become for me a daily reading requirement. Since I found this app I have been reading the text more infrequently and have learned so much more from Wilhelm’s writings than any other translation available. The app allows a deeper understanding of the trigrams and is a real treasure to own. The ease of use and clarity is so important to me and has made the study a daily joyful experience.
Love the original text and multi- method throws
Only thing I’d want is easier text formatting. I love the way it serves as a journal, and you can even export.
Was wonderful; now it’s very glitchy with “coins”
Was a wonderful app. Used for almost ten years. My dependable friend is now consistently glitchy and stuck and the forced use of the “coins” is performative, slow and annoying. Simplicity is good, useless ornamentation is not. Very disappointed. Sad, even.
I use this everyday.
Updated: With the recent update my entire journal history was wiped away. Years of readings. Moments of profound contemplation, crucial turning points in my life and my realizations relevant to them. It was a huge loss for me. My previous review This is a really great app. It is a way to cast the Yi Ching, with some other great features. But it also includes a translation of the Yi Ching that is very good. Wilhelm's translation is my favorite. Reading the book feels like sitting with a wise old granddad that instructs you in what to be careful of as you navigate the world. It is exactly the type of wisdom our modern culture has eliminated from our character. The text alone is worth the price of the app. But that it includes statistically accurate casting makes it a really great value. It is easy to use. Really, get this app. Great product.
