In the time it’s taking me to figure out how to get the text I want from the photo, I could have typed it up myself twice.

Downloaded to attempt use of the translate function and it does not work. As a scanner it works OK but I have better scanners from other companies.

I don’t remember how long ago it was that I wrote my original review below, but opening up a Pixter to “OCR” a page out of my son’s book, I find that if I want to do what I have been doing for several years, I now have to pay for it. It seems that there have been other changes to this app that had me scratching my head. It had previously been simple and intuitive to use, but not today. So, I withdraw the five stars I had given it in my previous review from whenever that was. ——————— PREVIOUS REVIEW: Like one of the reviewers before me, this is my first time writing a review for an iPhone app. This one is perfect. I went to a bulletin board nearby, used this app to take a picture of a lot of text in the ad, and converted it to text that I was able to use immediately. This is awesome!

With the recent update, Pixter has gone from the best iOS OCR app to one of the worst. I'm not sure why they felt the need to change things (such as eliminating the ability to crop scanned items before OCR) for the worse, but they have. I'd actually be willing to pay again for the app I once had updated for iOS 11, but this version is almost unusable. Find another option. I strongly suspect that this app got sold; I don't recall Engrish in the help before. Old review: I've hunted high and low for good OCR on iOS. This is by far the best I've found. The app needs visually updated for iOS 7 or later, but it really doesn't matter much. I'd also like to see a "smarten quotes" feature, but Pixter even recognizes em dashes! That's very rare in mobile OCR. In short, the app is nearly perfect.

Edit 2/17/18 I can't carry all my books around due to a disability so I used to use this app to scan portions for class. I paid for this app, however the developers decided they wanted more money and instead of being honest and explaining why, they decided to "update" the app so it removes all functionality without warning and force me to "buy" it AGAIN! This is extremely unethical and dishonest and I'm very disappointed with the developer. It's understandable to re-evaluate a business model in order to generate income and adjust accordingly, but the means of accomplishing that shouldn't be with an underhanded dishonest approach where you essentially perform an act of theft against customers who paid for the app. If you've improved the app and need to charge for the additional functionality, explain that to your current customers and restrict them from the added functionality if they don't upgrade. If you haven't added enough functionality for it to be of additional value reinnovate instead of being lazy, greedy, and dishonest. The sad thing is I would of gladly supported the developer if they were honest with their intentions instead of resorting to extortion.
