The Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map is the Android version of the popular paper map and website (visit http://WBSkiing.com). As with the other platforms, the Android map includes an index to more than 1,000 backcountry locations in Utah’s Central Wasatch mountains. It is the must-have app for Utah hikers and backcountry travelers.
With a familiar map-app interface, the Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map accesses your device’s GPS to display your current location on a high-resolution topo map. And with only a few taps, the “destination arrow” on the integrated compass will point to your desired backcountry ski location.
The app also displays your current elevation and lat/long, and will send your current location via email. And beginning with version 3.6.0, you can display detailed information on more than 200 of the locations including skiing difficulty, skinning distance, vertical climb, parking considerations, and more.
You do not need to have cell service to use this app--you don't even need a contract with a cell service provider.
PLEASE: If you encounter a problem with this app, please contact me using the support link (or via http://WBSkiing.com) before leaving a negative review.
Not worth it. There's little information on slope angle and not much information you can't get elsewhere. Save your money for a CalTopo subscription and you'll be much happier.
Fulfills its function & helps a ton with trip planning and while skinning. Would be five stars, except for lack of rotation support on Android (GS10+ with latest updates to phone & app). I have not encountered any issues with maps failing to load, search function, etc. However, sometimes it takes a few extra seconds for the map to display. Developers - keep up the good work. In your next update, any chance you could add some granularity to the slope shading feature?
Very helpful.
Deceptive name and description! Only covers a tiny fraction of the Wasatch mountains. Should change the name. Get the CalTopo app. It's free, and can shade any backcountry you want, anywhere!
This app is great for the area it is intended to serve. (The Cottonwoods and surrounding drainages.) I have not had issues with the navigation dot and I use it often while out on tours to confirm location. Accurate in the field and that's all I'm asking it for. Works with the phone in airplane mode as well.
it's nice to have access to runs and names. Fixed landscape issue. Great, useful app
Limited. This app is for a very specific area, and pricey for such a small area. When I tried to use this near Ogden, looking at the Wasatch Mountains, it tells me my location is off map. It does work in portrait, which was mentioned as a problem in other reviews, and the maps are blurry unless zoomed in. Cover the Wasatch front and use a zoom friendly map and this may be good.
Version 4.0.0 contains dozens of changes to the base map. Most are minor (e.g., tweaked pin locations, minor changes to location names, etc), but these changes continue to polish the map--this map matches the Fourth Edition of the paper map. It also fixes a problem where the map would appear in landscape mode on high resolution phones when the Display Size was set to Small in the Android settings, and reduces a problem where the map was blurry on some devices.
